There is a constant leak in the passenger floor compartment. Took it to the dealer 4 times, keeping the vehicle there at least 3 days a piece and its still not fixed.
The alternator went in the first 6 months, draining the battery and ruining the starter. All replaced under warranty.
The speedometer housing on top of the transfer case broke, causing the fluid to drain from the transfer case without my knowledge requiring a transfer case replacement at 44000 miles.
Right front ball joint needing replacement at 44000 miles.
Steering stabilizer and control arm bolts needing replacement at 44000 miles.
Total repair costs to date: $2800.00.
This vehicle has had numerous problems, some major, which should not be occurring on a vehicle this new. From day one, I have had to have things repaired/replaced and its seen the dealership more than any vehicle I've ever owned. This jeep doesn't see any off roading, its primarily a daily driver around town. Its not driven harshly and the maintenance schedule is followed. I cannot understand this. I fully believe the truck is a lemon and that Chrysler has made a defective product. I know of two people who, after purchasing wranglers themselves, had to trade them in for a more reliable mode of transportation after the rear ends went within the 1st 2 years. That said, I absolutely love this truck and I'm dismayed at its lack of reliability. I wish I could keep it forever however my wallet can't keep taking the hit. I'll be looking to Toyota or Honda for relief soon.
I have a 2000 Sport as well. I am a HARDCORE off-road enthusiast. To date, I have had my Jeep at the dealership for oil changes only. I did blow up a serpentine belt pulley, but I had also installed a York on-board air compressor and tank under the hood requiring a re-rout of the belt (and a longer belt). I put the new pulley in myself.
I don't know if you just got unlucky, or it's where you're from, or what. I belong to two off-road clubs and have never heard of any of the problems you seem to be having.
I live in Scottsdale, Arizona and trail mostly in Arizona.
Hi I am about to purchase my very fisrt jeep. I am getting a 2000 jeep sport. I have heard mixed review on it. I would really apreciate if some one would give me a solid answer on if it is a good relable truck that just has some you know brake down parts or is it just really bad.
I purchased a 2001 Sport with the 4.0L and automatic and I LOVE IT!!! I do all my own maintenance and have not had a major problem yet. I have taken my Jeep off road many times and have not been disappointed. I also drive my Jeep to work everyday and it runs like it did when it was new.
I drive a 2000 Wrangler with the Sahara package. When I bought it (used) it had about 22k miles on it, and now it has 65k (that's about 15 months of driving.) This area is high desert, with some high temps in June through August, but mostly low to way too dang low temps the rest of the year. Such as in 30 below zero and snow best measured in feet (I live in SE Idaho). The weather, the sanding and salting of the roads is hard on vehicles. The rural roads around here (some places I go to regularly have only dirt roads, if you can call them roads at all) get rutted and rocky. On top of that, I love to drive off-road through the desert at high speed, running down sage brush and over lava flow rocks that chew up my tires. Other times I crawl on granite boulders and other collections of igneous rock. This Jeep really earns its keep.
In that time I've only done the lube, oil, & filter thing. Two tires were replaced, but the wear was normal. The windshield has taken some big rock hits, but it bears only stars and not cracks. I think that's because the window is flat as a bread slice - the compound curves in other windshields must impart some unusual stresses on the glass. The folks at Sears Automotive told me I'm due for a coolant purge and change because the pH is too low. It doesn't drip oil or coolant. The brakes are smooth and fast. The engine idles nicely.
Couldn't ask for a better cheap convertible, you know? It's my first one, but now I think I'll be a Jeep man forever.

Just checked in to see if others had problems with the Wrangler 2000. I still have mine. Great vehicle... I thought. I always had it serviced at the dealer on regular intervals. Oil changes, coolant, inspection, etc. At 38k, the radiator had to be replaced because of leaking at a cost to me. At 67k, the cylinder head cracked and again, cost out of my pocket. Just short of 90k, the AC won't work. Need to have that charged each year or pay 800 bucks to have it repaired. I'll pay the 30 bucks to have it charged. I will keep the Jeep for around town here in the Eastern U.S, but I just purchased a Toyota Tacoma for long trips.
My wife's rig is a 2000 Wrangler Sport 4.0L ac, cc and 5 speed. 177k mostly a grocery getter have taken it hunting a few times. Problem in June of 2007 was going through antifreeze. no leaks never overheated. Did a pressure test on system found a radiator hose needed a little tightening. 2 weeks later oil pressure dropped to near zero when warmed up and idling at a stop, light on dash "Check engine soon". Step on the gas pedal a little pressure goes up to about 30. Runs great no clicking or clatter. Hooked up a manual pressure gage to the block found 10 lbs at idle 32 when up from idle. Had compression test done all good. No water in oil, changed oil and filter. Service center said run it there is nothing wrong with any readings. 2 weeks later wife started up jeep and clatter, clatter clatter and shuts off engine. Just got enough time and money to get the engine pulled out and into a shop for a rebuild. Found lots of thick oil like molasses when I pulled off the pan. Cause not known yet, oil has been changed every 3,000 miles since new with 4x4 oil. Engine re-builder called and said Cylinder head has a problem cracked at # 3 and # 4 looked like other jeep heads he has rebuilt 1999-2002 4.0L. Well at least we will start off with another fresh motor, clutch hoses in a few days. So don't think just cause you loose coolant and oil pressure goes down like mine you are in the clear for long. The motors are good and strong. Jeep owners see you on and off the road keep on waving. "It's a Jeep Thing"
