"An embarassment to the name Caprice"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The Caprice is a well built, reliable car. No repairs were required (other than regular maintenance) during the short time I owned the car.

General comments?

The round style 1991-96 Caprice was an embarassment and insult to the name Caprice. The round, bulbous body made parking and maneuvering a chore. The enormous dashboard made the car seem 10 times larger than it was. The ride was to soft and squishy to actually be comfortable. Dangerously sloppy handling. The tiny V8 gave mediocre performance and terrible gas mileage. The digital speedometer was impossible to read with the lights on during the day. My 1989 Caprice was faster, handled better, gave better mileage and was much easier to operate. Chevy ruined the Caprice name with these "Bubble cars." Try to find a low mileage 1977-90 model for a great driving experience.

I agree the bathtub design caprices are a little ugly and to have the little 4.3 liter pull a 4k pound car is hilarious. I am a proud owner of a 95 Caprice with the 5.7L engine, with that engine the car is a rocket. I also prefer the looks of the 80-90 body style as I do own two of them.

Well the bubble style had it's ups and downs just like the boxy style did. You must have gotten a very high mileage Caprice to have all the problems you experienced because any bubble style Caprice from 91-96 got just as decent fuel mileage as the box style did. The L99 4.3L and LT1 5.7L engines were available from 94-96 in the Caprice and both had more power than the box style Caprice did, unless the box style had the police package with the L05 5.7L. Even then the LT1 5.7L had more power than the L05 5.7L. The bubble style also weighed about 200 lbs. less than the boxy style did so I don't know how you came up with the bubble style was bad on gas and lacked power compared to the box style unless your engine was in such a bad state of tune. As far as handling goes, a 9C1 box style Caprice would most likely have the best handling, but the '91 and up 9C1's had very good handling also for such a large car. A regular box style Caprice compared to a regular bubble style Caprice aren't much different either as far as handling goes. With a set of good replacement shocks, springs and a tight steering any Caprice should have adequate handling. For me I love all the Caprices, I have two bubble style and one box style Caprice and by far the sport suspension equipped bubble style Caprice has way better handling than the regular box style, but the box style has a quieter smoother ride.

I keep all of my vehicles is excellent condition and properly maintained. I was disappointed all around with the 95 for the previously stated reasons, however the most unpleasant was the feeling of hugeness that the bubble body gave. I always felt that the car was bigger than it was. The 89 never felt like a big car because I could see all four corners an I knew where the end of the car was. The 95 was just like my wife's Taurus. Incidentally, the bubbles were 100-200 lbs. heavier than the boxes, not the other way around. Besides, torque effects acceleration more than horsepower and the L03 305 had 15 ft-lbs. more than the L99 265. Either way, whichever style you prefer, the Caprice should not have been discontinued, just updated.

What were you thinking getting the 4.3L Engine!? Upgrade to 5.7L engine and upgrade your gear ratio to 3.73 and you'll probably change your mind.

There is no reason to even own this car if you aren't going to get the 5.7 liter engine. I had a 9c1 before it was totaled and I'm missing it like crazy. Insurance actually gave me $800 more than what I paid for mine so I'm off to get another one.
