Nothing.
Please read my earlier review on a 1999 Corolla "A quality family car - but not the same quality as previous Corollas" - I said at the end of that one that I would like a 'improved' 2000 model. Well I have finally bought one... here's my thoughts.
From the outside it looks like a facelifted model...just new front lights and grille.
However, the car is VASTLY improved and covers ALL the criticisms I had of the earlier (97-99) version.
The seats (in the GLS) are now almost perfect giving upper and lower back support. The dashboard had been reworked with an excellent 'heads-up' display. The suspension is now near perfect - still good ride, but now greatly reduced body roll and good feel through the steering.
The engine... mines a 1.4 VVTi... is beautiful. Revs smoothly all the way and really flies after 3000rpm. Wouldn't believe it's a 1.4 engine. Mine has a fuel computer which shows 47.2mpg over the last 1000 miles. I couldnt believe it, but worked it out manually also and it is right! I do drive fairly slow, but I think 42-45mpg should be easily available.
The Gearchange... very light clutch, but gearchange slightly notchier than I would have liked... might improve with time, but I can live with it.
The comfort... great seats, air con, good materials. Very little wind noise at speed. Only complaint is road noise from tyres (at all speeds).
The spec... e/wx4, esr and air con, ABS, 6cd and tape, trip comp, alloy wheels, remote locking...plus all the usual spec you expect these days. I think it is a fantastic spec for a Corolla (but it is the GLS model).
Conclusion... In May2003 got my car for £6,500 with full Toyota History. I don't think you can get a better small family car. Its better than a Golf in almost all respect (apart from interior quailty, and maybe snob value). £6,500 would get you a W reg Corolla or a S/T reg Golf with low mileage.
I would say try and snap one up before everyone realises what great value they are right now. You really can't go wrong. Oh.. its worth hunting down a GLS model.
I have to agree with you, I have owned a 1.6 VVTi GS for a year now and its great, super torquey engine, amazing mpg, and nice refinement, a real little gem of a car, what is hilarious is watching all the boy racers disappear as they are left for dead by a Corolla. Highly amusing!
A seriously good car and a lot more fun than people realise, the handling is definately superior to previous models and you can really chuck it about on the twisty bits if you feel the urge.
