I haven't had any trouble with this vehicles engine or drive-train. The outer hub on the drivers side for the four wheel drive went bad at 90000 miles. Other than these problems it has been a great vehicle.
The interior is roomy and has lots of cargo space. It is a five speed transmission and has plenty of power.
Well I have 92 explorer XLT 4/4 and I'll be honest I love it I bought it for a truck to drive because I don't like cars much and the 4/4 comes in handy for the area we live in. however I am not impressed my the amount of money I have been spending on keeping it running. I had a thousand dollars worth of work done to the tranny (new seal, pump, and tork converter) and now 2 months later I'm told I need a whole new damn tranny..i also notice the brakes act up when trying to come to a stop for a fare speed the jump and jolt like they wanna snap off. Also it sound like the air conditioning fan it going and to be honest you stick thoughs fire stone tires in snow and she's not in 4/4 you're not going any were. plus I agree with a lot of people that have been saying it's a pig on gas cuz for a v-6 she drinks a lot, but I suppose it's kinda a heavy truck other than that write me back tell me what ya think you can find me at (http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/796526) Thanx.
I bought a 92 XLT 4x4 in 97, at 80K for $10K. I now have over 150K, and I never want to part with it. I've had the following repaired:
Ball Joints at 138K
Rebuilt Trans (auto) at 120K
new starter at 140K
inside door handles broke on driver/passenger side (new ones off ebay)
the 4 wheel drive system stopped working not long after purchase and I never had it checked
new brake master cylinder at 143K, and that is it.
I need a new ac/heater fan, a new a/c compressor, new radius control arms, and likely have the 4x4 system checked. Something is wrong with the air/fuel mix right now, too, but nothing major. Takes crazy abuse-I've had it completely in the air.
I love this thing, it isn't perfect, but it always starts except when the starter finally died. The only way to make it better would be to make it completely indestructible. The repair costs are not high except for trans rebuild, and it is pleasant to drive. I don't look forward to parting ways with it, but will have to someday. Everyone wants a Jeep Cherokee, but its so much smaller! The paint and interior is still very clean, and it always comes in handy. You can fit crazy amounts of cargo in it. I have also never been stuck in snow, even without 4 wheel drive, and its pretty good in the rain.
