"A threat to lives"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Everything has gone wrong with this truck.

This vehicle has acute engine stall failure with no warnings.

The fuel gauge is inaccurate and irratic, causing problems in starting the vehicle.

General comments?

Everything has gone wrong with this truck. Basically, it is a lemon.

For anyone who has the following problems, please check out the National Highway Traffic-Safety Administration website. For 2000-2001 you will be shocked at what you find!

My engine continually hesitates and stalls with no prior warning. I have almost been killed on various occasions (because of this problem!) on the highway and I am only 21 years old.

I have had it in numerous times to various Chevy dealerships. They repeatedly fix things that are not broken, charge me for diagnostics that don't diagnose, and prescribe parts for something that is not "sick."

After owning my truck for approx. 8 months, I have only proved to be a crash test dummy for Chevy/GM with no help from them.

Please, anyone and everyone looking into this vehicle, see the National Highway Traffic-Safety Administrations website first. It speaks for itself. Please do not let Chevy put your life in danger the way they have mine. They know the problem and are being investigated (since 9-02) but so far refuse to recall the problem. I could give you specific part numbers that can be used to at least fix the problem for another 80-90k miles. But why can't they?

Save lives Chevy/GM! We are innocent, are you?

I also have a 2001 S-10 with the 4 cylinder engine, I bought my truck in 2001 with 11,000 miles and so far I've not had any problems at all with it, it has been a terrific vehicle and it great on gas, I have had no problems with the gas hand or with the engine stalling out.

I also have a 2001 Chevy s-10, I have had repeated problems with the clutch springs breaking. in one year I have put 4 clutches in this truck. I have also noticed my gas needle was not accurate. also the starter has ripped the teeth off the fly wheel 2 times and was replaced. these trucks are crap, I have always liked Chevy, but they are testing my patience with this model.

I have a 2001 S-10 with the ZR2 package. I have had problems with the fuel gage being inaccurate and erratic.

I had to have the wiper motor replaced because the delay did not work. Just after the warranty ran out the recline lever fell off (broke off internally) the drivers seat (I have sevral friends that have had this problem). Oh yes and the locker in the rear Axel went out the other day.

And this thing gets the worst gas mileage ever if I am lucky on a good day it gets 15 miles/gal.

I have a 2001 s-10 it is the worst car I have ever bought it broke down the very first day I drove off the dealer and ever since then I have had a number of problems with it. I bought a new truck so that I could be able to go to school and save on gas, but its worst than my old car it has broken down more times than my old car. I wish they made cars like the old days when they made them right, and they would last.

Dear Everyone!

I have had my 2001 Chevy S-10 with the ZR-2 off road package since June of 2001. I paid $25,000 for this vehicle and drove it off the lot with three miles on it. I have been very dissatisfied with this vehicle. The MPG is just horrible. This vehicle denotes worst fuel economy than my full-size 1500 did. I have continual problems the stated vehicle. I have had the flue tank replaced twice, clutch repaired, seat recline handle replaced, third door handle replaced, and all lower transmission components replaced due to "metal fatigue". Now the parking brake is inoperable and "they" say there is nothing wrong with it that the parking brake is not supposed to be able to hold the vehicle at a stand still when the vehicle is at more than a 25 degree angle!?! Surprised? I was too! I will never buy another Chevy vehicle. I have been spoken too in disparaging manners, called a liar! Well, Toyota, here I come and this was my ninth Chevy truck!

We bought my son a Chevy ZR2 two years ago. The first month we had it the back axle had to be replaced. A month later we had to have a new transmission. One week later it was a new motor. Both levers that recline the sets broke with in a week after we got it. If we have haven't had got an ex. warranty

we would have been in a lot of trouble. Two weeks ago the trans. went out again. It was in the shop for two weeks. We got it back yesterday morning and it is 12:00 midnight Sunday morning and My son calls broke down once again. I go to see whats up and there is trans. fluid all over the place. I am ready to let it go back. we pay 385.00 a month and get to drive it maybe a week out of the month. What a Rock!

I own a 2002 S-10 LS, extended cab, 4.3 V6. The truck has 18K miles and I have had it almost two years. No problems whatsoever. I bought it primarily because I had owned a 1989 S-10 and drove it for 115K miles in 13 years with only normal maintenance required. I've been quite happy with both S-10 trucks.

Hello I own a 2001 s10 4 cyl. I haven't had any problems with my truck at all. All I do is take care of the maintenance. That's all. I even drive pretty hard on it. I love my truck. The power is definitly lacking. But the handling is great...

Hello everyone, I have a 2001 S-10 LS pickup. It has a 2.2 four cylinder with 31,000 miles. I bought this truck new. I have had fuel gauge problems, which was taken care of under warranty. Now the problem is the engine. at 29,000 mile I had the truck in for an engine knock and the dealer replaced the rod bearings and loosened up a wrist pin. At 31,000 miles I had the truck back to the dealer for the same noise. I was told it was a combination of piston slap and valve train noise. Today I took the truck to a different dealer for the same problem. with only 32,000 miles on it. I f I wanted a diesel I would have bought one.

I just bought a 2000 S-10 4X4 short bed 4.3 . I love the truck. I feel safe in it and, have had a few problems with it. The lower ball joints seem to make noise and probably need replaced, but show no signs of it. The truck runs great. Gas mileage if fair at 17 city 21 hwy. Fuel pump was said to go out when I took it back to the dealership for maintanence, but, never noticed any problem with it before. The truck has 70,000 miles on it and, used to belong to a utility co. I have owned 4 other Chevy trucks over the years and, have ran the guts out of them. 3 of which were S-10s an 88 an 89 and a 91 all had some problems, but I guess that is to be expected for having more the 150,000 miles on each. I would not own or have any faith in any other make of truck than a CHEVY. They are THE ROCK. Thanks for reading...BY the way what they say about Chevy's is true..".Old Chevys never die they just run faster".

I have a 2001 S10 that I bought new. It has 37,000 miles on it and had no major problems at all. The tailgate didnt fit right, and had it fixed under warranty. The seat cover was replaced, also under warranty. Aside from that it has just been regular maintenance. My only gripe about the truck as a whole, is the lack of power with the 2.2 motor. I bought a 1996 S10 new, and a 2001 and am happy overall. One last thought is the resale value, isnt as good as some other vehicles but it doesnt cost as much as others.

Hello, I've got a 2001 S-10 with the 2.2 4 cylinder engine. I bought this truck in November of 2001 it now has almost 90,000 miles on it. The only thing that has gone wrong is the fuel gauge that was fixed under warranty. The engine is a little weak, but what do you expect from a 4 cylinder. I've read what others have had to say about their trucks not getting good gas mileage and that their son keeps breaking down. Next time your son calls and says he's broke down at midnight on a Saturday night while out driving a 4X4, look at where he's been before blaming the truck. Also read what the gas mileage rating is before you buy the next time, and also teach your son how to care for a new vehicle. That's what I read into a lot of whats on here.

I bought a 2001 s-10 LS new. It's been a good vehicle up until about two months ago. The engine hesitated on me as I pulled onto the highway, it's like it was'nt getting gasoline. Then the engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they said it was an O2 sensor. They replaced that, now just a couple days ago, it did the same thing again. I'm going to take it in tomorrow. They said it might be another sensor. I'm a little upset at them for not checking the others out the first time it was in. I had no idea the truck had more than one. Unless they're just messing me over?

I also have a 2001 GMC Sonoma 2.2L with problems. Around 19,000 miles the trucks fuel pump had to be replaced, around 21,000 injector number 3 had to be replaced because of failure then the catalytic converter was replaced. Now those problems all happened within the same year. After all that was replaced the truck ran fine for about 25,000 more miles now at 50,000 miles the engine hesitates, stalls, and dies when it idles for 10 minutes or more. The truck is a great driving truck and for a 4 cylinder it pulls a 2,000 pound trailer without a problem. Heck mine even has the limited slip rear end and it will go through about anything, but you can't depend on the thing. And to the comments left from the guy above about "not blaming the truck" well maybe you just got a good truck because 80 percent of what I have read so far on this site everyone seems to be having problems consider yourself lucky. Thanks.

I am on my second S10 and love this model. I tell you about my first love though as I new her better than I know myself. I bought a 1998 base 2wd, 4cyl, 5spd with the ZQ8 package brand new in Feb. 98. This little truck drove and handled like a dream. As long as I drove it remembering it's limitations. Those of you who complain about power, it's a freaking 4 cylinder for Pete's sake! It's not made for towing houses, it's made for propelling the truck and recommended cargo load down the road at safe speeds. If you "need" more power, which 99% of you DO NOT, then get a full size truck, that is what they are made for.

Those of you who are whining about mileage, my truck got better with age, but never better than 26 mpg. It's a truck people, it has all the aerodynamic grace of a brick.

Did it have some bugs to work out, yes, but were they major problems, no. During the warrantied period I had a minor problem with the transmission, a detent was messed up and the truck would pop out of gear when parked, or driving if you pushed the gear shift (don't push the darn gear shift then idiot!), but this was really not much. The fuel pump also failed, mainly because I ran it out of gas trying to go just a little bit farther.

After the warrantied I had some troubles with the exhaust system, but those were caused by driving the 2wd truck into areas where most of you wouldn't take your 4wd trucks and banging the cat converter and muffler around.

I had to replace the rear axle... after a spin out accident on ice where I slid into a ditch sideways.

There wasn't much on this truck that I needed a dealer to fix though. Everything is laid out in a pretty straight-forward manner, and if you've got a little sense, you can do most everything yourself. I've done everything from change oil, to replacing a cat converter or fan blower, to replacing a tie rod at the side of the street when it broke in traffic.

So what I'm saying is the majority of my problems were not caused by my truck, but by me. That truck took much more abuse than it should have, and still had a nice tight clutch when I sold it with 183,000 miles.

Unsafe? You're on crack! I had three separate incidents where my truck SHOULD have rolled, flipped, or at least laid over on me, and she always kept her footing.

She was faithful, reliable, and always there for me, like a wife or a good dog. It's been 6 months and I STILL miss that truck! If you don't want your S10, give it to me, I'll be happy to give her a good home.
