"Save your money for the Z28"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I got the car brand new in 1999 as a self-graduation present.

-in 2001, it needed new brake pads. It didn't squeak before, and has squeaked everyday since the new pads were installed.

-in 2002, the alternator went out while I was driving. I barely made it home without the engine cutting out. Dealer replaced under warranty.

-in 2003, the rear differential was making noise. The dealer replaced the bearings under warranty.

-in 2003, the car developed a shake on accelerating. I asked the dealer to look at the transmission. They claimed the clutch was bad and replaced it for a small fortune. After that telling my father (I was out of town) that a cylinder wasn't firing. Replaced a spark plug wire and the shake was gone.

Rear differential making noise again. Took it in on a Wednesday. Informed that afternoon that the team that did the bearings did them wrong. Thursday was informed gears may be damaged and an inspector would be out to determine if it was covered under warranty. Friday was told the bearings installed earlier were defective. Work to be done on Monday. Monday was called and told the bearing were replaced, but in addition the brake pads needed to be replaced soon, a bolt had broke on the exhaust manifold, AND the entire drive-shaft needed to be replaced.

Drive-shaft is to be replaced. The inner piece is rattling inside the loosened outside piece of the shaft.

General comments?

I loved the car to death. It was quick and comfortable for me as a driver. The passenger space was not as good. I don't carry much in the way of luggage so the small trunk wasn't a bother. I find it hard to believe how much trouble the car is having after only 4 years. I'm not a hard driver, and yet the major components of the car are showing wear and needing replacements.

I totally agree with this review. I have 51,000 miles on mine and bought it with 38,000 in 2001. I replaced the rear axle with a Firebird's due to differential problems. (not a car person, but I think it was the differential) My alternator quit in the middle of Manhattan so I replaced it and the battery. One day the car didn't start so after replacing the starter I found out it was the computer from the chip in the ignition key. (a worthless security feature) I had to have a new ignition installed into the steering column. Lately, when I shift gears the engine doesn't pull steady or strong it sputters til around 2500 rpm's. Love the car, but it seems there's always a problem. My A/C doesn't work and I had my windows tinted just before my rear defrost stopped working. Try backing up with a tinted frosty window at night.
