Engine bogs.
Throttle has a mind of it's own - either accelerates too fast or doesn't move at all.
Transmission flares and/or slams into gear.
Left front speaker buzzes.
Wiper switch sticks.
Suspension clunk in front.
Movement (play) in driver's seat.
Paint coming off trim.
Water filled headlight module.
Sun visor broke (twice).
Noisy brakes.
Brake rotors needed machining due to run-out.
Automatic climate control changes speed so often you wonder if it is broke.
More problems than I can list here.
I loved this car when I saw pictures of it in the car magazines. Loved it even more sitting in it at the dealership. The price was so attractive I let it lull me into purchasing this luxury car from a company who, in the past, had quality control problems.
What a mistake. I have had nothing, but problems since purchasing it. Have had it into the dealer a total of 7 times and they still cannot fix the engine bogging problem, plus, when they "reprogram" the throttle they make it worse, the car lunges now when pressing the throttle.
I'm surprised to see that the writer had so many problems. I bought a new XG350 in October 1992, it has just over 10,000 miles now. I haven't had any problems whatsoever. I really enjoy this car.
1992 or 2002?
I too have issues with my 2002 for:
1. "Throttle has a mind of it's own - either accelerates too fast or doesn't move at all."
2. Suspension clunk in front.
3. Left front speaker buzzes.
4.Paint coming off trim.
They have also never been able to truly fix the "Check engine light" it has had everything changed 3-4 times that can go wrong with that issue and still comes and goes -
I did like the ride initially, but the front suspension has been completely overhauled trying to figure out the clunking noise when going over small bumps and it seems to be an inherent design flaw - I noticed this in several Sonatas they put me in, in my many trips to the service dept.
I hope they work this things out in the 2006 model, as I was not impressed with the 2003 and later model changes in the front-end and wheels - as well the wood grain in the newer models looks really fake now!
I also have a 2002 XG350. It has been a wonderful car and I have just passed 60k miles. I'm really surprised to see the negative comments. I have not had any mechanical problems at all. I replaced the original Michelins at 40k miles with Falkens and they have improved the handling dramatically. My only complaint would be the expensive "scheduled" maintenance. My advice would be to shop around. The dealer that I purchased from quoted $800 to replace the timing belt. Another dealer 30 miles away quoted $650, and one 50 miles away quoted $450.
I have had numerous problems with my 2002 Hyundai XG350.
The transmission slams and or does not go into gear allowing me to pass.
We have replaced the right window gear three times
We have had it in for suspension problems over four times
The vehicle has 65,000 and we are on our third set of tires, even after an alignment. After Hyundai taking apart the entire front end of my vehicle, they refused to align it.
We were unable to get it in to our local Hyundai for six months because they kept canceling our appointments. We have had the vehicle for two years now and have had it in and out of the shop for 18 months.
Driver side visor broke twice
Pulls to the right and they keep stating it is due to alignment problem.
Our air bag light continues to go on.
We have had three issues with the power steering.
I would never purchase another Hyundai as long as I live. Worst customer service ever!
I agree with most of these comments. Impossible to control acceleration, hesitation, surging, Malfunction Indicator Lamp coming on, air bag light on, regular tire replacements, frequent trips to the dealer to no avail. Yep, sounds like my XG350!
I have a 2003 Hyundai Sonata LG and it too had the clunk noise in the front suspension. When I took the service manager out for a drive, he readily diagnosed the problem.
To correct the matter simply required the removal of the under sized rubber grommets on the front sway bar and the installation of new ones of proper size. This was done under warranty at 7000 miles.
We have over 60,000 miles on our 2002 XG350 and have had zero problems. I also have a 1999 Hyundai Elantra and the check engine light may be due to a faulty gas cap or tightening the gas cap too much. I found that if I turn it a couple of clicks past what seems to be tight does the trick.
I know this thread is old, but I wanted to let everyone know my experiences with my 05 xg. I bought it used with 19000 miles and had it in the shop within two months of buying it with a throttle failure. Give 'er gas and no go until I let off the gas and try again. After replacing relays and the throttle control assembly it self and a reprogrammed cpu (at least 5 trips to service center) the problem has become a hesitant throttle with lag and unexpected lunges and stalls. I loved the car and the service from the local dealership, but now enough is enough. I dropped it of and told them I didn't want it back. Thank God for warranties and lemon laws.
I have an XG350 which I purchased new in 2002. At first I loved the car and for the most part I still do like the looks, the ride and the power of the car.
I have had the same problem with the car wanting to lunge when starting off. A problem the dealership tells me is just one of the idiosyncrasies of the car.
The aggravating points of the car are the check engine light and the air bag light.
Right from the start I had problems with the check engine light coming on. The dealership kept telling me that it was due to me putting too much gas in it. This was not the case as when filling it, when the pump clicked off, I would not allow anyone to put even one cent more into the car. The dealer finally conceded that the XG does seem to have some issues with the check engine light and that I would have to live with it. The other thing I now notice is that the light comes on when it gets damp out and then goes off again when it gets dry for a while. When the light comes on it also triggers a sensor in the gas tank that prevents the fuel from entering and only allows me to put gas in the tank in very little amounts at a time.
The air bag light started to come on two years ago and I was told that the plug under the driver’s seat came loose. They tightened it, but then a few months later it came loose again. Now they want to charge me $40.00 every time they have to turn off the light to pay for the computer scan even though they know where the problem lies. The computer must confirm it.
I have now been told that this is also a common problem with the XG and the fault lies in the fact that I am 6’2” and my wife is 5’2”. When the seat goes back and forth it puts stress on the plug. I am being told that the only fix for this is to replace the wiring harness at $1000.00 and they can’t guarantee it won’t happen again.
The car over all is good, but as a result of the poor resolution of the small problems which are also common problems, I will not purchase another Hyundai product.
I own a 2002 Hyundai XG350 and unfortunately I have experienced some of the issues listed. Today, I noticed a "puddle" of power steering fluid when I was preparing for work. This is the third incident with the power steering - the pressure hose has been replaced twice and I'm not looking forward to the estimate later today. The car lunges sometimes when the accelerator pedal is pressed and often takes off too fast. The car pulls to the right often, so I have conceded that is a characteristic because I have paid for more than 6 alignments since it was purchased. The ride is not smooth and I believe I have purchased my last Hyundai.
I own a 2002 XG350 and when I first purchased it last fall I had a lot of difficulty putting fuel into the tank. The fuel hose would shut off constantly. It also had a check engine lite referring to the fuel system. I solved this annoying problem by removing and cleaning the fuel tank filter assembly which is located in the rear quarter panel behind the drivers side rear wheel. Access it from under the car. No more check engine lights or fuel filling problems. The only thing that is still a bit frustrating is the noises/rattles that come from the rear suspension but I'm still chasing those.
I purchased my 2002 XG350L new in June 2002. For the most part the car has been very reliable. It had some minor surges and stalls over the 5 years, but in the last month before the 5 yr warranty ran out, it really started acting up. It was making a weird noise when cold and it was surging constantly. I took it to a local dealer to fix under warranty. They replaced a throttle sensor under warranty and wanted to charge me $260 for 2 new fan belts, I ended up paying $110 for the belts after accusing them of unfair pricing. In any case, the car still makes noise so it was not the belts and it is surging worse than before. Guess what!!! Its not under warranty anymore... tough beans for me per the dealer. AND to add insult to injury, 8 days after it went off warranty (June 8) the alternator went. Sorry!!! off warranty!!! Cost me $528 out of pocket! Looking at a new car this week and it won't be a Hyundai. I bought my last 2 already. (I also own an Elantra)
I bought my 2002 Hyundai XG 350 2 years ago and was so happy to have a beautiful, luxurious sedan. It had all the bells and whistles I could have ever have wanted. Unfortunately, 2 days after purchase, the steering locked up and the car would not drive. After sending it back to the dealer, they determined it had a severe power steering leak and that it was in the vehicle notes to be fixed before they sold it. (They obviously forgot.) After a full week in the shop, they finally fixed it and I was happy to have my car again until 2 weeks later when I had my oil changed and they noticed another power steering leak. It has leaked since that date. They quoted $650 to change the hose. OUCH! The car has always drove "rough" but I ignored it due to my undying love for this car. I have always had my air bag light on and my check engine light flicks on and off every now and then. Now, within the past month I have started to experience the take off surges that have been mentioned in these comments and my car has even acted like it was going to die as I pull out of driveways and parking lots. Once it gets going, it is fine. Very odd and even though I still love the car, I plan to start looking for a different vehicle. I agree with the majority of these comments, it is not a good car!
I too have a Hyundai XG350L 2002. I too have had a similar story. The check engine light would come on and they would reset it telling me I didn't tighten it enough. This went on for several trips to the dealer. Finally they decided to change the cap. I took a trip to Florida from Connecticut and the light would go on and remain on for most of the trip. Sometimes it would go off for miles then return to the on position. I resigned myself to the fact it was a quirk of this car and ignored it. I took an 8000 mile trip out west and Had the check engine light on all the way. I returned and started to have problems putting gas in the car. I brought it to the dealer in Connecticut. They said there were two devices that were shorted and needed replacing. a "Valve-Canister and a Valve -Purge" at the tune of $435.96. I had this done and when I drove off the check engine light came on and when I went to put gas in the car the gas pump would shut off after 1 gal. I called to complain about this telling them I just paid $435.96 for nothing. they told me they did what the computer told them to do. I asked if I still had to pay for this and they said yes. They were going to order another part and call me when it came in. I waited 2 weeks and went to another dealer and they fixed the problem for $139.44. they told me there were large leaks in the canister and manifold vacuum lines because they were swapped incorrectly. I have filled the gas tank with no problem. no more "check engine " light either.
