1998 Volkswagen Golf Mk1 CitiGolf from South Africa - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

HT lead governer caps.

General comments?

Continued manufacture of the MkI Golf, known here as CitiGolf, is unique to South Africa. This is my third one, as they are so reliable, robust and cheap to run. My first one ran to 260000km before I traded it in, and went to all corners of this country on some horrendous roads. The now old-fashioned carburettor fed rorty exhaust note and excellent handling feedback maintain the fun driving experience.

Great cars, especially the Citi Golf GTi, and now the Golf Life.

I wish they would import these to the UK. I have a MK1 Golf GTI and would love a new one.

The MK1 golf is best car I have ever driven, I have had five so far. I am now considering importing one from south Africa.

I agree, the SA-built Citigolfs are great to drive. We shipped ours to Europe years ago, and now need to part with it. If anybody is interested in a blue 1989 South African built Citigolf (MK1), please contact us in Germany at +49 5281 608725. This car still drives well and it is a right-hand drive (ideal for the UK).
