What things have gone wrong with the car?

My biggest problem has been alternators. I am now on number 5. No one seems to be able to figure out why they all have failed, (except one had bearing failure).

These trucks, (when equipped with the turbo diesel) are notorious for automatic transmission failures at around 40,000 to 60,000 miles, but I am just now beginning to see some shifting problems at 160,000 miles. Ford engineers should be flogged for installing a commercial truck engine rated for up to 35,000 lbs GCVW, in front of a wimpy car transmission. They can talk up the E4OD all they want, but is is still just a car transmission. I have spent much time researching adapting an Allison Automatic, (the only real truck automatic transmission ever invented), but since my truck is a 4x4 this is not a bolt-in option.

I am now beginning to notice some front axle suspension components are wearing out. I'm not looking forward to paying for those repairs, although the Hotchkiss Live axle system is cheaper to repair than the crummy independant suspension systems used on other trucks.

General comments?

This truck was a terrible kidney buster until I replaced the tires and shocks with aftermarket items.

The engine has pretty bad turbo-lag coming off the line, but it makes up for it in mid range power, (which is astounding). My truck as equipped weighs 7,200 lbs, but can whip most other trucks of much lesser weight and keeps up with cars nicely. When traveling the steep North-eastern Arizona mountains, I set the cruise to 70 or 80mph and I am passing absolutely every machine on the road, (without shifting out of overdrive)! I mean corvetts, Z28's, Dodge V-10's, everything!! It takes the curves like it's on rails and doesn't slow down for any mountain grades.

I love the super heavy DANA-60 front axle which has now been downgraded to a DANA-50 on the '99 and newer trucks.

Hi. I work for a Christian organization which does a lot of towing with their 1992 Ford F-350 rollback. We have experienced severe problems with the factory Ford transmission. During the past several of use, we have had to either replace or rebuild the transmission at last every four months. We have tried unsuccessfully to install an Allison automatic transmission. My question is: Is it possible to bolt an Allison automatic transmission behind a 7.3L diesel in a F-350? Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you. Please respond to this at: Unicycler1@aol.com.

All Ford IFS front axles of this series truck are Dana 44 or 50 for the F150 or F250, the difference is the axle shaft size and hub. Some F250's had Dana 60's around late 1997 like all of the F350's have had. ALL the Super-duty series 99 to 04 use the Dana 60 when Ford went to the 8 x 170mm hub bolt pattern. 2005 saw a redesigned front axle suspension.

True the E40D is weak (overdrive) pre-1996, then mods were made. I have 186k on my 1996 and no troubles. The secret is a huge trans cooler and 15k oil filter changes. The hotter the trans gets the faster the oil break down and wear goes up by the square.

The International T444E speaks for itself. In 9 years I have replaced only the vac pump, cam sensor, batteries, idler pulley, and brake master cylinder cruise control kick out switch ($22) Recommend larger exhaust 4" and better intake for economy. ***The best bet is to use Amsoil for all fluids, you save money "over time" in materials and labor especially.*** Plus things just don't wear!

I have ZERO problems with any of Fords body or accessories.

ONLY 1 COMPLAINT I don't like the brakes!!! They are under sized for towing and the rotors warp. I converted the rear to 4-way disc and saw an improvement.

I told my children to save money and bury me in the truck.

I have been plagued with transmission replacements (four in two months) and even waiting for Ford dealership to put in the fifth one now. I'm not even towing anything yet. I just want to get it to the car wash so I can detail it to trade off. I loved the truck until now, but must trade off. I will stick with Ford if I can find the right combo.

I drive a 2001 F350 Lariat DRW. I too have had to rebuild my tranny at 65000 miles. The company that rebuilt it for me suggested a billet torque converter and shift kit. $3000 and 3000 miles later it's running fine. However, I'm also interested to know if an Allison tranny/7.3 L Powerstroke combination can be achieved. If anyone has information please e-mail to simplesimon211@yahoo.com.

I have a 1995 F350 with the powerstroke and the E4OD it has about 250000 miles on it now, I have seen very few problems with the tranny. I am still driving it, the only thing it when you stomp on it 2nd gear might slip a little, but it hold the power from the engine still. It just doesn't give you a really firm shift.

The E4OD is a strong transmission when maintained. True the weak point is Ford not using a billet torque converter in all their applications. It explains the weak mushy 2nd gear feelings. #1 most important item... get a LARGE auxilary trans cooler and change fliud every 15,000 miles tops. Using Dextron/Mercon III will end its life earlier also. If you MUST use regular trans oil chose the Mercon V, which will stop most of the shudder of the torque converter.

I strongly recommend using AMSOIL and the cooler with a temp gauge if you tow a lot. I now have 198000 on my 1996 E4OD with no rebuilds etc. I change every 45-60k depending on the oil analysis (@$25) results. I have saved hundreds on oil changes alone and thousands on tranny repairs.

I have a 1988 ford f350 tow truck it's a good truck except for every once in a while it acts like it won't take fuel and it will stall youll have to let it sit for 20 minutes and it fires right up what the world could be the problem tried several things.
