"Tempermental, unreliable, but a nice ride if you're willing to work on it"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Several alternators burnt out, rear brakes work intermittently, multiple oil and transmission fluid leaks, courtesy light electrical circuit short, "pops" during stops, engine surges on hills and between 20 and 35mph.

General comments?

At first this vehicle seemed AWESOME, but after about six months it showed its true colors. Oil changes every 3000, fluids checked weekly, maintnance done as needed, but the thing is so unpredictable. One minute it runs great and you think it's the best car on the road, the next it has about ten new problems. I just don't understand this car.

I think you either got ripped off when you bought it, or you beat the hell out of it yourself, because I've never heard of a Lumina in that bad shape.

I own a 91 Chevy Euro Coupe, with an auto transmission. This car is at times a dream to drive, but eats gas and has developed many problems, the worst now being the transmission which will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear. The vinyl dash is warped and putting new spark plugs is very difficult.

I can't believe anyone would find this car to be an unreliable gas guzzler! My 1991 now has 155,000 (I bought it with 19,000) miles on it, and still gets me to school each day. It gets 20-22 mpg around town, and 28-33 mpg on a trip. The only "weaknesses" I can find are lousy rear brakes (fronts are GREAT!) and a poor factory alternator. It was repaired at 50,000 miles, again at 61,000 miles, and finally at 65,000 miles, all by the dealer. Once I had it replaced at 80,000 miles, by a REAL mechanic, there were no further problems. If you don't like a Lumina, you're doing something WRONG!

I'm not thrilled with my 1991 Lumina. Things seemed to be built on the cheap, such as the hood latch. The thing disintegrated on me a couple of months in. And what's up with those ridiculous windshield wipers? What a STUPID design. The damn things COLLIDE with each other! I don't know who the Einstein was who decided he wanted to be different, but these wipers are some asinine. The thing handles bumps like a Jeep, and if you've ever ridden in a Jeep, you know that's not good. The roof liner is also drooping, which give the car a trashy vibe. I'll give it an overall "C".

I have a 1991 Chevrolet Lumina 4 Door 3.1 Sedan. I love the car, but I have had several problems with it. It currently has 307,000 km on it, the alternator has been replaced 3 times, one of the engine coils it it has been replaced, the rear brakes have to have constant replacing and only sometimes work. The front grille is made of what seems like cheap plastic and has been replaced once. The blinker mechanism on the steering column has been replaced twice. The light's on the climate controls no longer light up. The engine seems to have a hard time shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. My vacuum lines have failed several times. She's now burning some oil. All and all the car has been taken care of and has had and oil change at every 5000 km it's entire life. I love the car just wish it worked better.

1991 Lumina APV 166,000 miles / when driving over 30 miles at 60 - 70 mph engine all of the sudden just shuts off no warning lights or any clues if I let it sit for a couple of hours it starts right back up with no problems, then a week or so goes by whit no problems and it does it all over again this happened 3 times but the 4th time it stopped it won't fire at all. Could this be distributor problems or should I suspect transmission problems?

Thank you

I own a 1991 lumina with the 3.1 V6, the engine is extremely reliable, it has 305000miles/almost500,000km, the major problem I have is a heavy foot so I have had to replace the transmission twice now, but the car is worth it, the engine does hesitate when it feels like it so I just put the gas pedal to the floor and she runs like a charm. I love the gas mileage 38mpg highway, 27 city.

I bought my Chevy Lumina euro at a auction. It seemed OK when I was there checking it out, but when I brought it home all kinds of bad things were going on. I had already replaced my transmission and bought a hole new wiring harness because my fuse for my fuel pump kept blowing under the hood??. Now that the new harness is in the car doesn't want to stay started and it's just reving itself high and low. I had a mechanic check it out and he says that some kind of computer under my hood is giving out too many codes, so he tells me to get a new computer. Anyone else come across this kind of problem with your euro?? comments please?

Please email me...stylee001@aol.com thank you.

The car is very old. it was old when you bought it. hopefully you don't buy a Ford product or Chrysler. in them you will replace the engines or trans, better yet keep the wrecker on the speed dial. this info is unknown to true Chevrolet fans.

To begin with, I am a female and married. I bought a 1991 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Euro in 1997 (with 90,000 miles on it) for my daughter to finish high school. Before letting her get it on the road, I had all the fluids checked and replaced also replaced the hoses and belts. She drove it to school everyday through 1999, no major problems. She drove it 35 miles a day to and from work through 2003 when I bought it back from her for my son to drive.

It has been maintained very well all through the years. I have used the best oil (Mobil one synthetic) and made repairs as needed.

The Lumina has 162,500 miles on it and still drives great. In the city I get 28 miles per gal. On the highway I get 35 miles per gal. Either I lucked up on an excellent vehicle or just maintained it well. I Love it.

I recently bought a 1991 Lumina Euro 3.1L - 118K miles. The car high Blue Booked for $3250 - I got it for $1850. It doesn't like to shift into 4th consistently, but is a smooth-running vehicle. It does have some poop for a 3 liter 6 cyl. I had a Z24 Nissan just before this car and the Chevy eats it for lunch - literally. It is a smooth ride for 118K on it. So, my very inexperienced, perhaps premature impression is: I like it.

I own a 91 lumina euro, 2 door. I find it reliable, and

good on gas, with plenty of power, I have not yet found a

Grand-Am to keep up with it yet. The most common oil leak on them is on top of engine were oil shaft is, simple fix,

if you're a mechanic like me, or know someone. Most common

coolant leak, below coolant reservior, that goes to heater

core. Most common brake problems is the emergency brake cables, and pedal, I had to replace mine and brakes are

excellant now.Another common coolant leak, check for cracked head. For easy access to rear spark plugs loosen front motor mounts. put bolts on bottom holes on mounts, push car forwards or backwads while in gear, have a buddy chalk tires whe engine rocks in position desired. Hope this info helps anybody, They are easy to work on if you know the secrets. Trust me on this info, I recently rebuilt the whole top in this way, without getting under car for exhaust. Would be happy to help anyone simply contact me at iron6bill@yahoo.com.

I bought my 91 lamina in 2004. It is one one the best running car on the road I get great gas mileage. The only problem that I have had was my hood release broke, but a piar of pilers work wonders. It has 350,000 on it and still runs like a dream. So I have not had really any problems with it.
