"A good car ruined by shocking after sales service"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The first fault with the car was that the ABS servo had become loose and was vibrating. This happened after only approx. 1000 miles. Renault immediately fixed the problem.

The Car's Onboard computer system had to be reprogrammed after 6000 miles. With Headlamps and front fog lamps switched on, the car would appear to lose some elctrical power out whilst dropping into 3rd gear and when coming to a halt at a junction, it would on occasion completely cut out. Car was taken into Renault initially who could not find a fault as the engines computer did not log anything. On the second visit, it was admitted that this was a class defect and the Onboard computer was reprogrammed. I have not encountered this problem since.

At 28000 miles, the offside rear brake "collapsed" causing the brake shoe to seize against the drum. This happened in a car park at low speeds which was lucky because had this happened on a motorway or other main road, there would have been much more serious consequences. As a result of this fault, damage was done to the brake drum and bearing, as well as the shoes. Renault do not require to inspect these brakes until the 36000 mile service so I was appalled when the Renault dealership (Renault Edinburgh) refused to accept this as a manufacturers fault and told me to pay £330 for the repair, which I have not. However I complained bitterly to Renault UK customer services and the matter has now been partially resolved and is still ongoing.

General comments?

The car is very punchy and handles really well, due the sports steering and suspension and over sized wheels. T.

The safety systems on the car are very impressive and it feels a very safe and secure car. However, it could do with having an alarm fitted as standard.

Seats are very supportive and there is a good level of spec in the cabin, however the first thing I did was remove the standard stereo and replace it with something a little louder!!!

Thanks for the review, it was very helpful as I am considering getting the new renault clio 1.2 dynamique. I was not too sure what the problems had been with the car and it is useful to know what happened to yours. We also had a brake disc 'collapse' on one of our cars (an R reg citroen xsara, also luckily at very slow speeds, just coming out of our driveway actually! but then that car had done a good 80K miles!)

Will be using the renault garage in St A's / Dundee and will remember to avoid the Edinburgh one!

Liz.
