1999 Nissan Skyline R34 from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"An expensive unreliable rip off!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

This car has been a lemon ever since I bought it in 1999 after it was imported to Australia that year. Not only that, but it is extremely expensive to be repaired and get new parts.

It has had constant troubles with the turbos.

The fuel injection computer went awry so it was not injecting on the right stroke all the time.

It burns oil all allot.

I have had to replace the spark plugs 3 times already.

The firing order was not correct so it wasn't firing when it was meant to.

General comments?

The engine is shocking and unreliable. It has hardly any torque, so you never get pushed back into your seat. Without the twin-turbos it would seriously be a granny car.

Although I don't like he engine the handling is excellent, it hugs the corners very well! The interior is alright, but isn't good enough for what I paid for it.

I won't buy a Skyline again and I was stupid to in the first place (especially for such an expensive car). Spend your money on a car with power (V8).

Yo,

learn to drive first than buying things that you cannot handle and fix up right, I myself am a skyline enthusiast and your review is so appaling to all street racers that dream of kicking your ass by writing something negative about on of the best and fastest cars there are.

The skyline you bought was probably thrashed or used as a drift car. Also it is very frequent for Jap imported cars to have the odometer wound back, sometimes several times. So it is important when buying an import even from a dealership to do all the relevant checks. Skylines are built solely as performance cars, if the one you bought suffers from a lack of performance than it is probably just a lemon in the bunch, don't let it cloud you view on these cars, for the money there isn't much faster. Ps. 'street racers' need a better hobby.

You should read the review before you comment, the car is a 1999 acquired with no K's on it i.e. he got it new. So it was not used in japan as a drift car. He probably just got a bad one.

I really find amazing you have had so much trouble. I have owned 2 skylines and I have found them to be some of the toughest most reliable sports coupes around. my first was a 1995 r33 Gtst. I have never gone easy on it and it took nearly 30 pounds of boost to kill the stock rb25det engine, it still runs, but has a spun main bearing on cylinder 6. I know your saying "but its not a gtr" I know, but I am getting to my newest acquisition, a white 1999 r34 gtr. when I bought the car it already had 80,000 kilometers on it. since then I have put another 15,000k on it and lets just say I have been hard on it too. admittedly I had to change the clutch on it, but that was due to a series of 6500+ rpm launches at the drag strip. I would say it took ten launches in all before the stock clutch failed at 95,000k. the car with stock turbos running 15 lbs of boost makes it to 60 in just over 4 sec. I can't imagine a car with no torque doing that ever. the only mods to the car are a ecu chip, trust exhaust with catalytic converter still in place, and a set of hks suction kits. all I can say is the car is wicked fast, with a good bit of torque at low rpms, but a massive surge of hp after 3600 rpms.

It's a shame that you had such a bad experience with your r34, I have driven a few exotic sportscars and have found none of them to be as awe inspiring as the gtr.

I don't think he bought a new skyline. Can't be new and most probably it's been trashed in Japan before selling off as a reconditioned car. I got mine a few weeks back with no mods or whatsoever and I have no problems with this beast.

This is the first time I've heard of such problems. Are you sure you've got a Skyline? It starts with an "S".

The car was probably a Chinese fake, I know a man who once bought a fake Ferrari and I've heard about those fake ass skylines.

Suggestion: Whenever you buy a car, make sure you do research on it, and personally inspect the car for any imperfections, there should always be at least one reason for those...
