"It's a great vehicle"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

"Service 4 wheel drive switch" light comes on continuously. The dealership has put in 2 new ones, but the light still comes on.

General comments?

We love this Jeep. It drives good and is comfortable. The only problem is the 4 wheel drive switch light. We don't know if it's torn up or if a computer chip is making the light come on. The dealership says the light does not come on when we leave it there.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Steven.

I have also had a problems with the "Service 4 wheel drive switch" light. My husband boss also have had problems with it. He took into the dealership and they told him not to worry about it. However, it gets really annoying.

I too have had this mystery problem with the "service 4x4 switch". My dealer told me to ignore it because he hasn't a clue about what to do about it.

I too own a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I love... as I well should, I have over 430,000 miles on it!! About a year ago the "Service 4-Wheel Drive Switch" alert beeped into my dash display along with it's irritating alarm. I've taken it to 2 different mechanics and had the 4-wheel drive switch replaced twice in the last 3 months. The thing STILL beeps at irregular intervals and drives me crazy! Since I drive for a living, ignoring it simply isn't an option. My mechanic told me 4 weeks ago that he'd research the problem and call me back as soon as he found a solution; I've NOT heard back from him and he doesn't return my calls. If ANYONE gets a real solution to this problem, PLEASE post it so we can all continue to enjoy our Jeeps in peace. :0) Thank you.

I too am dealing with this annoying, service 4wd switch alert. I have looked in the owners manuel and the book I bought just for my jeep to research problems. I have come you with nothing. I have researched on another site and they just say ignore it nothing is really wrong. Please help.

Thank you.

I own a 1995 Jeep grand Cherokee and love it also, but my 4 wheel drive switch drives me crazy also.. My Dad who has been a jeep mechanic for 40 years and was laughing as he read this since he has not found out the problem either (and it is driving him crazy!!!) He thinks it is the wiring harness from the switch to the graphic display is the difficulty, but still working or this. Will update when the problem is fixed which I know it will. Just a question though did any one of you put in an autostart in your vehicles after market? if so this could be the problem. sincerely, Kim in Canada.

I too have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee laredo. with 216,000 miles on her. it still runs great has a valve clatter with low grade gas. i run high octane no problem. and yes the check 4 wheel drive light comes on. my mechanic said it is a fail safe system to keep the 4 wheel drive serviced. he said it did not need to be serviced that often and not to worry about it. it had become annoying so I had him disconnect the light and alarm. the 4 wheel drive still works fine. just no light or alarm. I have the 318 v 8 model dodge engine. can't beat it. thank you herb.

I too have had the 4X4 switch problem with my '95 Cherokee Orvis edition with 160,000 miles. It has been doing this for 9 months, sometimes a lot, sometimes not a all. My mechanic was not helpful (after swapping in a new switch and then taking it out when it didn't work). I found a few other postings on the internet with info you all might appreciate. My problem stemmed from the VIS (Vehicle Information System) which is the unit with the picture of the jeep on it where the tires go blank and the "service 4X4 switch" error code comes up. There is a loose wire or a bad connection within it that causes this error code. To find out if this is your problem, wack the side of the console and you might find that the error code dissappears and/or reappears. The bad news is that the dealers want upwards of $700 for this part, and for most of us we'd rather live with the problem than sink that kind of money into it. One person was able to remove the VIS and fix the connection. Another solved it by just pulling the fuse to the VIN... but it makes me nervous to drive a car with so many miles on it without having warning lights for things like engine temp and coolant leaks. Hope this is helpful. If anyone finds a cheaper source for a VIS, or figures out how to fix it, the information would be much appreciated.

I also have a 1994 Grand cherokee limited with 141,000miles on it and the Service 4wheel drive Switch comes on, along with the annoying beeps. sometimes it comes on even with the vehicle off! I am guessing it is just a loose wire somewhere. I would just ignore it and forget about it. as we all know it is very annoying and nobody seems to know how to fix it. INCLUDING THE DAMN DEALERS! You would think they might have some kind of idea on how to fix it, but nope. They are just there to make money. However I have found that screaming at the top of your lungs at it sometimes can do the trick. hope I have been some help. P.S. Be Good to your BEEPIN JEEP.

I also own a 1994 Grand Cherokee Larado and yes my annoying service 4 wheel drive switch light and beeps drive me crazy, I have been talking to a mechanic and he can't find anything wrong or knows how to fix this problem. I'm always worrying that there is something wrong and I've been afraid to go on long drives in fear I will break down. But I watch it closely and realized it goes off and comes on when I hit bumps in the road so I've come to terms that there must be a short in the system somewhere. So yes if anyone knows how to fix this problem Please post it, you would think after so many have taken this problem to the dealer ship they would have a recall.

I am the proud owner of a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. It's been a very reliable vehicle. I have experienced a few minor things, the latest is a flashing "Service 4WD Switch" on the console display panel, there is no beeping at this time. My mechanic had not seen this service warning before. but it was not the first time I had experienced a false alarm, from this display. Going over rough surface seems to be the trigger. I would guess it's a wiring issue, or possibly that this system is failing, simply due to it's age. nothing lasts forever. If it did we couldn't afford it. My "Key-less Entry" no longer works, which may be connected to the "Service Notice Chime", or "Beep". I'll get it figured out, until then I have to use the key. I have also noticed, It doesn't like the cheap gas. But that's A small price to pay, for the years of service, and fun my Grand Cherokee has provided. A Jeep is not made, it's built. Donnie M. I finally found others with the "service 4 wheel drive switch" warning. I have 218,000 miles on the vehicle and it runs fine. Have had to replace several parts such as water pump, fuel filter, front wheel struts.

My mechanic (independent) says he called the jeep organization and they told him that it is a "glitch" in the system. The beep is annoying.

I also drive a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and have

approximately 162,000 miles on it and it has recently started

to display the 4X4 switch needing serviced. My local jeep

dealers mechanic said to flush the transfer case and replace

the fluids. I am not to sure if that will work after reading

all of the comments, so I have decided to do it myself. If

it works to any degree I will post it on this site.LL.
