My brakes, rotors, tires, air blower, turn signals and hazard light switch has all been problems that I have had with my 2001 Chevy Malibu.
I bought my Chevy Malibu brand new from a Chevy dealer. My first year of ownership was fine, until I read some of the reviews. I had to replace my brakes and rotors which I see has been an ongoing problem. In my second year my a/c blower wouldn't work on levels 1 or 2 so the dealership replaced that part. Now my turn signal and hazard light works when they want to and most of the time they don't want to work. GM has announced a recall on the hazard switch which is behind the column a costly repair and my 3yr/36,000 mile warranty is up and GM doesn't want to help because they tell me my car was manufactured at a plant that's not involved in the recall. But the part that's not working is the same part they are recalling on 2000 and 2001 Malibu.
I am having the same problems with my 2002 malibu. the turn signals and hazard lights hardly work at all. my turn signals didn't work all day today.
My 2000 Malibu is (apparently) also not involved in the recall, due to its plant/parts batch, so I will have to replace the hazard switch myself (or else solder it myself).
However, overall, I have to say that I love my car well enough. She's got her issues, for sure, but we're none of us perfect. ;-)
I have a 2001 malibu. Just took it in today for the recall (hazard switch) to be fixed. The problem was that is sounded like the harzard lights were constantly on - a "clicking" noise constantly! Well, the dealer said he replaced the recall problem, which was the hazard switch, but this was another problem which would cost me $400 for them to fix!! Problem still exists after supposingly fixing the recall. Comments?
I have my 2001 Malibu in the shop for the third time with starting problems. It just dies, I never know when or why and do not trust the car to get out very far from home anymore. Funny thing the shop I have it in has someone else's same kind of car with the same problem. I have had to replace the transmission at 69,000 miles, and now have been foot for two weeks. The turning signals work only when it want to, air-conditioner makes a loud roaring, however I am thankful it still works at all, and there is a popping noise under the dash that sounds like something shorting out. I do not have the finances to keep this car up, it keeps me drained. Evelyn.
My 2001 Malibu is truly the worst car I have ever owned. I
despise this car. The engine sounds like a bag of skeleton bones being shaken in a tin can. This, says the dealer, is not a problem with function. It's just a loud motor. Although, from mechanics I'm familiar with - I understand other dealers have had the cylinders honed by machinists to alleviate the problem. My $1,000 extended warranty will not deal with the issue, so says my dealer. My guess is it will be more than a 'noise irritation' right about the time my warranty runs out. The Fuel guage has now begun to intermittently drop to Empty just minutes after filling the tank, and on one occasion, the tank read 1/8th full, and I was stranded out of gas while on my way to the gas station. Now the latest fun this car has presented me with is the intermittent appearance of the 'theft security' light coming on while I'm driving. Once the vehicle is turned off, in order to start again, I have to sit through the 10 min. process to reset it in order to drive.
DISGUSTED in Virginia.
We have a 2001 Chevy Astro van with the same problem. Not in the recall, but dealer will not fix. If you shim the hazard switch over with a piece of wood, it will fix the problem. (brake lights will work, but hazards won't) Better than paying $300 + to Chevy to install another switch that will go bad.

I have a 2002 Chevy Malibu and have been having the same problem with the blinker lights coming on when they want.
I checked with the dealer and was advised that the 2002 was not in the recall for the switch. I am not very happy since the car is only 2 1/2 years old and I would have to use my extended warranty to get it fixed but of course that has has a deductible.
I have a 2001 malibu ls, the blower knobs goes out every 7 months on the dot. It cost me 250.00 each time it goes out. Now I am having problems with my brakes. The aluminum calibers cost me 700.00 to replace. These calibers make all kinds of noise and sounds like the front end is coming apart. I was told that the aluminum calibers can't withstand heat, so why are they put on malibu's.
I have a 2001 Malibu that has continuous problems. It just seems to be a really horrible car! I have spent more money fixing it than I actually paid for the car! I wouldn't advise anyone to buy one unless it is bought brand new and you don't plan to keep it for a long time. I bought it with 42k miles. It now has 96k and it is falling apart! It definitely was not intended to be a long term car. I like the look of the car the engine, muffler, etc are crap!
My Father who passed away last December bought a 2001 Chevy Malibu used in 2003. One year before the recall notice came out they replaced The Hazard Switch for the lights. Now here I am it's 2006 the Blinkers do not work, So I receive a Recall letter afew months ago saying that your blinkers won't work OK. I take it to the Dealership ofcource since it was replaced one year befor the recall with the same part they will not do it I (HATE THE DEALERSHIP)
I have also been having problems with my hazard lights. I received a letter saying to take it to a dealership and they would fix it. They come on and make clicking noises for no reason. I have taken my 2002 Chevy Malibu to the dealership (2 different ones) four times and they all claim to have replaced the switch; yet the problem has never gone away. I am now taking it to another non- Chevy delaership.
Hi, I have owned 2 Malibu's One was a 1999 Malibu which always had problems with the rear brake lights going out. I replaced just the part that the bulbs sit in and have not had any problems since. I also replaced the device that houses the hazard button, to stop the annoying clicking that made you want to drive off a cliff. Now I have a 2002 malibu and have problems with the blower not working on 1,2,3, I have read that all I need to do is change a fuse that is located underneath the carpet on the passengers side. So wish me luck and if you can fix the minor, but annoying things, the cars will run and last forever. Pushing 125k on my 2002, and 150+k on my 1999.
I purchased a 2001 Chevy Malibu, because at the time, there was no tax for the life of the loan. The car was new, but a few months later I had to replace the brakes and rotors.
The car is 5 years old now, and I have had the brakes done 6 times, and needs them again. The cars coolant, which was not to be changed for 5 years, as per the sticker, turned to sludge in 3 and now has to be topped off once in a while. The lower engine knock that I have been hearing, has something to do with gears, and I am in need of a new engine. The car has an electrical problem that is draining the battery every 3-5 days. I have put way too much money into this piece of garbage, and Chevy says that this car, which hasn't left the confines of a 25 mile radius from my home, is not their problem. Figures I need a new motor the exact week of my last payment.
I bought a 2001 chevy malibu used with about 50k miles and it has been downhill ever since. After only 2 months, it died on me while in interstate traffic. Fortunately, the dealership fixed the problem. Since then, every 3 to 4 months, there is a problem (air conditioner, radiator, engine, you name it). Yesterday, my transmission went out without warning. I think the entire malibu line should be illegal.
