"The engine that wouldn't quit, no matter how hard you drove it!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Power steering pump.

Muffler.

Antenna stopped going up and down.

Front seat broke.

Rear windshield wiper sprayer.

General comments?

Engine wouldn't die. Drove the car extremely hard. Engine was burning oil but it just kept on going like the Energizer bunny. I've never had a car that could take so much beating. It didn't care if I constantly redlined the engine although it had over 230000 kms on it. Bought the car for $2000 CDN .

Put in $2000 CDN in repairs (incl tax).

Traded in for $3250 for a 2000 Maxima SE.

I gotta say I was sad to see it go but the Maxima is awesome as well.

I felt like this car had a personality and would keep on going until the wheels fell off. Truely remarkable car.

I have a 1990 Nissan 240SX XE, and it is just like you said, the most persistant and durable car I have ever seen. My 240 has about 200,000 miles on its 2.4L 12V engine and it's still going strong.

The only problems that I have had with this car are the front driver's seat broke and could not recline, the muffler had a hole in it, the antenna refused to go up and down, it's burning oil, smoking out the back, the odometer stopped at 134,000 miles and the gas mileage has gone to 18-20 mpg. I know that seems like a lot, but on a car this old with this many miles that's nothing.

I redline every gear, and bring it up to speeds well over the speed limit, and every morning the car starts up and begs for more. I have changed only things that needed to be changed to fit my teenage lifestyle. I changed the head unit to a 1 disc AM/FM, I added 2 10" subwoofers in the trunk, changed the muffler to performance, put hyper white lights in the front, and I am contemplating throwing in an intake system and fog lamps.

I have no fears about this car, I plan on taking it to college with me next September and I plan on it staying strong, powerful and fun until I am forced to sell it (knock on wood). Nissan, I thank you and I definitely will be back to you for my second car, and all the cars after that.

I have a /90 240 as well with about 180k's on it. It was burning oil too so I simply changed the valve stem seals and it stopped burning oil! cost was under $100 Canadian at my favorite mechanic's garage. Money well invested :-)

I have a 1991 240 LE that now has 131k miles on it, and still runs consistantly. I have owned the car for the last four years. Two of which I was still in High School. At the time I had no appriciation of the car, but enjoyed burning out regularly because it was my first rear-wheel drive car. I drove it HARD for those two years, and now, two years later, as I start adding aftermarket parts to the car with plans of autocrossing, the car still runs consistently.

I will keep this car as long as I can, and only give it up when I can buy a Z. Fellow 240ers can all relate to this!

I also have a nissan 240sx. I have put tons of miles on the car in the course of two years and it still keeps going. I always drive it fast and hard and it never gives me any problems. The only major repair made was a rebuilt trans., but who would expect a trans., to last 200,000 miles anyway. I enjoy this car greatly and would suggest nissan to anyone I know buying a car. Great job guys.

1990 240SX/Silvia.

I have recently sold my 240, and bought a Nissan pickup, but in the year that I owned it I loved every minute of it. Everyone who has problems with these cars either bought them from someone who didn't know how to take care of them, or they themselves didn't know how. If you, but change the oil every 3000 and make sure you do all your preventative maintenance they will run forever and like someone already said, "...they beg for more."

What a sweet car for the money. I never felt like I needed more power. I could have used it, but never needed it. As I took the car to college my Silvia took me over the Snoqualmie pass without hesitation. Up every hill I could always accelerate in 5th gear-and all this without any engine mods. My truck is now up for sale and I plan to buy a '95 Maxima. Awesome cars!!!

I have an '89 240sx, I bought it for about $2000, had minor problems when I bought it. About a month or two later, the fuel injectors went bad, and it started to jolt, and idle real rough, and sometimes died. Got that fixed, for about $20, and now it runs great, could use some extra horsepower, its nothing compared to my 94 cobra, but its still fun to drive. its got 97000 miles, and runs great, I'm planning on putting the SR20DET black top in it, to give it a little more kick, so then it might be able to compete with the cobra. KEEP YOUR NISSAN, there great!

I have a '91 Nissan Stanza. It is over 85 thousand miles, but after a few minor repairs it still drives pretty good. I have a question though for anyone who can help. When I start the car it will run great. The accelerator is perfect for me, I touch it and the car moves pretty good. The brakes work unbelievably well too. The car keeps a good 1000 RPM's at idle as well. My problem occurs after I have driven the car for a while or when it starts to rain. The RPM's will drop and soon the car will rumble furiously in the idle position. After this, I have to press the accelerator further and further down just to make the car move. By now I know to get off the road and sure enough the car will die. Sometimes it starts back up and I can continue driving if I do the following: 1.) Turn off my CD player and everything else that drains power 2.) Rev the engine as much as I can in neutral (I have an automatic if that helps). I hate having to do this and if the car won't start I have to get a tow truck to come get me. Any suggestions?

Several mechanics have looked at my car too. They have checked and/or fixed my muffler, spark plugs, oil pan, alternator, and my battery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

^^^^ this is probably a bad spark plug wire, get your wires checked, and replace them, $60 tops and its easy to do, make sure you change your plugs too if you do it :)

Hey if your car idles rough, you need to clean your AIV.

The aiv is a small black box bolted in the engine bay where the drivers side fender is. there is a small hose attached to that black box which is attached to a metal housing which you neeed to take apart and clean. Buy carb cleaner, take it apart and scrape and clean it until the inside of the metal AIV is metallic again.

I have an 89 Nissan 240sx with the heads up display. I was surprised it still worked when I bought it. It has 175,000 miles on it and it runs great. I have had to replace the slave cylinder and that's it. I put a cool air intake on, and a performance exhaust. I have also put a racing steering wheel and a front strut bar on. I also ordered a speed chip recently, but I haven't received it yet. It's a great car. It's not the fastest car, but I have beat plenty of newer cars. I like the handling the most, it's like riding in rails. I have also figured out how to by pass the speed limiter and the rev limiter. I haven't done it yet because it's still snowing out, but I plan to.

It's not supposed to take off, you're supposed to stay on the runway.

I have a 1989 240sx. I bought it for 2500 from some small dealer. It only had 75,000 miles and had no rust. The engine seems in good except that it's an automatic. I'm planning on buying a SR20 engine and making it 5-speed. My first car was a 300zx, but got into a car accident and the car was totalled. So as you can see I downgraded a little bit. From my experience NISSAN cars are the BEST cars in the world!
