2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS from North America - Comments

"It's the worst decision I ever made on a major purchase"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The check engine light has come on FIVE times. I have had 2 O2 sensors replaced, my catalytic converter replaced (at 20,000 miles) and have had TWO mass air flow systems replaced.

I've had 5 drink front holders in four years. They've broken and when I've hit a bump, they've spilled all over the air vents, causing them to get sticky and no longer work.

My glove compartment fell off at 48,000 miles because I opened it gently.

I've had to replace my driver's seat because it broke. My passenger seat has also broken.

Yellow goo collects on all four doors.

The cd changer skips cd's or won't play certain cd's.

The armrest latch broke.

The power window regulators broke, but were under recall, so it was free to fix them.

The oil pan design is too low and I've had to have one replaced because it got cracked.

The electronic coolant temperature sensor broke and needed replacing, as did the engine cover.

The front spoiler (underneath) fell off.

The gas lid broke and would not shut.

General comments?

I will NEVER buy another VW again as long as I live! The thing I regret the most is leasing this piece of junk longer than the warranty period of two years (VW NOW has a four year warranty). We're giving the car back (FINALLY) next month and in order to even give it back, we had to pay $900+ dollars to get things fixed (drink holders, glove compartment etc.) before we can even GIVE THE CAR BACK!

I originally bought the VW Jetta because of VW's excellent reliability, ability to out tons of miles in their cars and good resale value. That must have all been with their older model cars, because everyone I've talked to who owns a 2000-2003 has had a NUMBER of problems with their cars, This includes Beetle, Passat, Golf and Jetta owners.

Thank God I've already purchased a new car, a Honda Accord EXL, which I've heard nothing, but positives about from current and past Honda owners. Having grown up with a Honda, I feel secure in my decision.

I am amazed at the similarity of problems listed in your review compared to the litany of problems I have experienced with my 2000 Jetta 1.8T. You are at least lucky that you can turn the heap in, I am stuck with a paid for heap.
