Ignition module continually failed, replaced several times.
Power sunroof never seems to want to work.
Interior is not the best quality.
Although this is a top looking car, with a reasonable amount of power (Commodores are too quick for it though), it is the reliability which is a serious problem.
Parts are way too expensive, and the handling is good when not on the power, with power on, under-steer and torque steer is very annoying and can be plain dangerous.
On a number of times, putting full power on meant the car would suddenly dart off to one direction through no movement of the steering wheel.
This is a car that should be left to those who reallylove their Calibra's, as no one else could put up with this rubbish. Thankfully, I only owned the car for less than 4 months. If you're an owner, or planning to buy one, get out now, while you can.
Totally agree, whilst it is a good looking car, the Calibra is a car that is nice to drive providing it is not driven too hard - front wheel drive and lots of power don't mix too well. More a cruiser than a sports car. Wouldn't recommend to anyone unless they were prepared to spend big on highly likely problems.
I disagree, whilst calibras are notorious for their problems, it is in part because people do not know how to take care of them that these problems arise. they are European cars and they are in a foreign country, you have to take care of them differently. for starters they were designed to run on 98 octane petrol... anyone using regular unleaded in a calibra is asking for a short engine life and dirty injectors etc. secondly timing belts should be changed every 60,000km and oil changed every 5,000km at the most. these are basic maintenance for any car to ensure a long life. thirdly do not buy a calibra if you want a car to "thrash". these cars are cruisers, built for high speeds on autobahns (230km/h!), not for mashing gears or burning clutches at the lights. I do however agree that there are some issues inherent in the design of these cars that no matter how well you keep your car, will still arise. but why complain about these repairs when you can pick up a good example for $8,000 that only an $18,000 can match in features, looks and performance? I would comfortably spend $6,000 in repairs on my calibra and still feel like I got a great deal on a great car. they are very underrated. I have looked after my calibra for 8 months now, changed the timing belt once and regularly service it, I have had no major problems at all.
