1999 Dodge Durango SLT from North America - Comments

Had to get front end alignment.

Replaced lower ball joint.

Check Engine light is on.

Transmission does not shift into overdrive.

Engine idles rough.

Light on dashboard does not come on when shifted into four wheel drive.

I just purchased this vehicle last week.

Asking other people with similar problems for advise on what they did to solve the problems.

There is nothing you can do to solve these problems except get rid of the vehicle. But then again, you keep pumping money into it, calling it a good investment, but its not. 1998 Durango we own has had $13000 in repairs in last 3 years. Basically, it's a Lemon.

I own a 1999 Durango the ABS and brake light is on, it is now stalling and the spedometer is out, does not register speed, and the diagnostic I took said defective speed sensor. So I am lost!

Our 1999 Durango had the ABS and brake light stay on and the speedometer was not operating properly. A quick change of the rear speed sensor fixed all three problems. Part was around $33.00 and took maybe 15 minutes to change.

If you have not yet had the Intake center gasket checked you should. We were told that will cause idle problems and motor pinging and this means your oil is being burned up. You could blow up your motor very quickly if this is the problem.

I had my 99 Dodge Durango ABS light on, did the brakes all new still was on, the speedometer would not work, it ended up being the rear sensor. There are 2 sensors in the Dodge Durango SLT look at both. I first changed the 1st sensor nothing happened. Then I was told of another sensor in the rear. When I had the rear sensor changed the problem was solved. The ABS light went off, and the speedometer worked.

I have a 99 Durango with the ABS and Brake light on. Speedometer is OK, but no cruise. I changed the sensor on the rear axle differential. Did not work. Where is the second sensor located?

We own a 98 Dodge Durango. While driving on the interstate the ABS and Brake lights came on. We continued our trip and the brakes seemed to work OK. I noticed that the speedometer would cut out below 20 mph. After we got home I pulled the sensor out of the differential and tested it for continuity. It didn't have any, so I am replacing the sensor. Will keep you posted.

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango 4wd 8 cyl. The engine light came on and the diagnostic code is the speed sensor. Where are the two sensors located so I can replace them. Is the same sensor used for both places?

I have the same problems as users above report. ABS light, Seat Belt light, and eventually Check Engine light comes on for no reason, also speedometer and tachometer go to zero. No engine problems at all. The problem disappears when engine is returned to idle and transmission disengaged. I intend to replace the rear differential speed sensor as suggested. Is this something that I can do myself? Any suggestions other than that?

I have a 00 Durango 4X4 SLT with the ABS light on and this thread of information is helpful.

Question - Did anyone ever find out where the 2 rear differential speed sensors are?

I am the proud owner of two 99 durangos, the first bought in Dec/03 and the 2nd was Jan/04. At first they seemed to have no problems then the stereo speakers busted (yes in both).

The Dec. Durango lost oil pressure and engine began to knock and the engine had to be replaced. I read on line how dodge said this was due to not changing the oil every 3000 miles. The oil pump went out at about 78k miles, 1k miles after we had the oil changed. It was $2300 to replace engine. (Napa carries a crate engine for around $1500)

The Jan. Durango oil pressure starting acting up about 78k miles, but we caught it in time and oil pump was replaced. After 2k miles it was replaced again at no cost. Our mechanic seems to think that the oil pan gasket is overhanging and shredding into the oil therefore clogging the oil pump. Cost to replace $300.

We are now at ABS light, Brake light and Check engine light not working on both Durangos. This happened at about 90k miles shortly after that the speedometers stopped functioning (on both). Napa carries the ABS differential sensor for about $40 including shipping we are going to try that to fix the problem.

Both of the 99 Durangos have lost the function of the A/C at under 100k miles. One won't hold a charge which we have tried 5 times and the other registers full on the freon and needs a new compressor. The cost of a new compressor is around $500.

Now the sudden engine dying has started, mostly at stop lights and going down hills. They usually start back with no problem, but this is very dangerous as we have a 17 year old daughter who also drives these from time to time.

What are the odds that an owner has two Durangos and the exact same breakdowns occur? We love the look and drive of the Durango. The gas mileage and unreliability of the model will deter me from buying another Dodge. I agree that Dodge could show more concern about consumers satisfaction if they intend to keep loyal customers. So Dodge owners good luck, I will be ridding myself of the problem soon.

For the person saying they are lost about the speed sensor on the 1999 Dodge Durango, mine also is doing the same thing. The ABS and brake lights are on, and now my speedometer is out. It is going to be repaired Friday; it is a speed sensor on the transmission, but there are two, so if you try to do it yourself, beware only one is available to the public that I know of. However, on the bright side, it can be fixed by a mechanic for $100 or less. It is a quick fix for them, and they can run it through their computers and figure out which one it is before they change it. Good luck.

I am with you Durango owners.. I have the exact same problems on my '02 Dodge Ram 1500.

Speedometer is not working, ABS light is on, brake light is on, check engine light is on, and stalls when I slow down quickly from rpm's dropping too low, so I have to rev it up as I'm braking; it's very exciting.

Dodge's look good.. that's it!

I am a proud owner of a 1999 dodge durango SLT V8 5.2! I love it and the awesome thing is that it has 207,000 miles and nothing has went wrong with this except that we are getting the AC Compressor replaced, which is costing us about 250.00 out the door. The truck runs like it came right off the show room floor and it still sounds and drives mean!!

There is not a day that goes by that People don't compliment on this truck, it is absolutely beautiful and runs great! I am sorry that everyone has had such a awful experience with them but I am a proud owner and wouldn't trade it for the world!

Good luck to all of you and hope that you get all of your issues fixed, don't get screwed by dealers, I have found out they will fix unneeded things, find a nice mechanic that you can trust that will fix things that only need to be fixed!!!

I have a 1999 Durango that developed a problem with low oil pressure. I could not find the problem so I dropped the oil pan (you will need to carefully read your repair manual before you start this work if you are going to do it yourself) and found that the oil pickup was plugged up with what looked like carbonized oil in the screen, there was no sign of any other deposits anywhere else in the engine.

I removed the oil pump and checked it to make sure it had not suffered any damage and cleaned the screen. I have been using full synthetic oil since then and have had no further problems.
