Lifters, lifters, lifters. I owned the vehicle for one month, took it on the freeway for about 300 miles, and the lifters started ticking about 60 miles into the trip. Continued off and on for about four or five months, and I then had the lifters replaced at 110,000 miles. It ran great for about two months, and the ticking started back up. Have tried running full synthetic to clean out the system, but still hasn't helped much. It only takes about five miles of going over 60 miles an hour before the ticking starts again. As long as I don't take it on the freeway, or drive over 60 for extended periods of time, they stay quiet.
I love this vehicle for the car itself. It handles great, it rides very nicely, has plenty of power, it looks great (besides the early 90's "splash" decals) and it is comfortable.
Other than the lifters, I love it. It is just costing me too much to try to keep fixing it.
I have a 93 Rodeo and have owned it since day one. It began ticking at around 60k. It was diagnosed by my mechanic as needing a new timing belt tensioner. After it was then replaced, the ticking stopped... for about 20k. Then another tensioner was replaced. When I asked my mechanic why so soon, he informed me that the after market tensioners were not lasting. Lucky me. All was fine until my Rodeo hit 100k.The ticking started again and I foolishly assumed it was another tensioner and I found another mechanic to replace it with an actual Isuzu part.Well, the ticking continued. My mechanic told me it was the hydrolic lifters. He informed me that the lifters cannot be adjusted only replaced.I'm sooo darn lucky. My mechanic then spoke of a product that can be added to the crankcase called Seafoam that sometimes cures the problem. I found it easily at my local auto parts supplier. As my mechanic instructed me, I added it to my oil, ran it for a week and then changed my oil and added another 16oz. can of Seafoam. Then, run it for another week and change it again. He also told me to use the 5W20 moter oil for now on. Since the last oil change the ticking stopped, but I think that its starting to return. I am hopeful that after running the Seafoam for the week and then changing the oil to the lighter weight that the problem will be solved! I too, by the way, for some crazy reason, also really dig my Rodeo.
-Lucky.
