Heater motor works intermittently.
Wheels need regular balancing.
Broken glovebox compartment.
All-new brakes, including calipers.
Radiator perished.
Watch out for rust where the sill joins the back panel, under the seats and on the rear quarters.
Trim quality is okay, but fasteners and clips are easily broken.
Great revvy engine, seriously good handling.
Buy one, thrash it, sell it for what you paid, and get another one!
Buy one, thrash it, then get another one? Well that's the reason good ones are so hard to find these days. And when you DO find one that some idiot ain't rinsed out it might set you back up to £3k. Of course if people looked after them in the first place...
I totally agree, its so sad that people always seem to abuse such a classic car. and yes, good ones that haven't been 'thrashed' are very hard to come by.
These cars are supposed to be DRIVEN. What's the point of owning the iconic hot hatch if you don't use it as it was intended?

The point BEING is that you so called BOY RACERS destroy these works of art trying to show of to your hoodie mates! Its people like you that have pushed this classic car price (a good one of course!) to insane amounts, hence now I'm trying to save up a good couple of grand to buy a 1.9 GTi.
If you had a brain then you know that these cars if you look after them will give you smiles per miles amd more bang for your buck, BUT only if you LOOK after them!
To the guy who said they should be thrashed and then sold on I hope you get a proper lemon of car and causes your wallet to shrink A lot!!!
To all you 205 GTi owners, look after them as they are starting to attract a lot of interested people, keen to get a piece of motoring history (Myself included!!!) 1 more thing I'm only 24 and drive an 106 GTi and I'm not a Boy Racer!!!
Could'nt agree more with the comment above!!! Fantastic cars destroyed by the boy racer crowd!! Leave them standard is all I can say!! As they say "once they go that way, VERY few ever come back!" Shame really!
The same way has gone with the mk1 and mk2 golf gti's badly owned and maintained and thrashed to there limits a real shame, I've had 5 205 gti's and 6 golf gti's and everyone I've spent big on to get them back to decent a road condition, and they're all still going strong everyone.
I do not sell them to hoods and i sell them a lot less than I've bought them and spent on parts and my own labour.
