The first thing to go was some sort of seal in the transmission.
Next, the same tail light went out 3 times in the space of a month.
Next, the fan belt was squealing - I had to take the vehicle to the dealer 3 times (that's when they caught the tail light) to get repaired. Apparently, there was in issue with a tension bar.
Next, the fuel pump failed.
Next, the check engine light came on. Apparently, it was caused by a leaky gasket connecting to the fuel tank.
Next, the dome light started making horrible creaking noises. The dealer replaced a liner/gasket there, and it went away for a couple weeks. It is back now, along with the dead tail light.
Next, horrible squealing sound. I am guessing wheel bearings?
As others have stated, gas mileage is horrendous.
Service was okay. Everyone was very nice, and they tried to accomodate you as best they could, though I have doubts as to their competence.
To date, I have made 7 visits to the dealership in the 8000 miles I have owned the vehicle, and have to take it in again. One visit to the dealer for every 1000 miles put on the vehicle is not acceptable - I will trade in this vehicle before the warranty expires.
I have a 2001 ranger edge super-cab 4x4 and have no complaints about it. I think you just bought a lemon. You never mentioned in your gripe about the truck that you had it looked at by your personal mechanic, everyone knows you should do that. I get good gas mileage and never have a problem getting to where I need to go off road. I think you are just used to driving jap crap no offense.
Non taken... but if you're so used to something better (jap crap, as you say it) why return to something lesser...
Hello, I bought a 2001 ranger XLT used with 42,000 miles. I have not yet had any problems.Although, When compared to my 1993 ranger that also has the 4.0 liter with 210.000 miles. This 2001 has much less power and as you said fuel mileage is excessivly bad. When cold weather hit, I went from 19+ miles per gallon to 14. Not acceptable!!
I own a 2001 ford ranger 4x4 XLT. I bought it used with 37,000 miles and now has 75,000 miles on it. I had it in the shop the very next day I bought it with transmission problems. They said nothing was wrong with it, its just four wheel drive. It jumps when I take off, when it shifts gears, and stops. I don't know how many times I have had it in the shop now for that problem. Also, at 50,000 I had it in the shop for my timing chain. The noise and vibration the truck puts off is ridiculous. Now, I have it in the shop for my accelerator sticking. When I let off the gas, it is still going, it doesn't slow down, then it takes forever to stop... if it finally does stop, my tires are still spinning, like I'm power breaking it. I have had this in the shop I don't know how many times now, and no one knows exactly whats wrong with it. I don't drive it hard, just to and from work. I like ford, but I wouldn't own another ranger.
Auto trannys need maintenance, you guys do know that?
And I see this weird, thing in all your comments. You bought USED. The previous owner must of flogged it and not maintained it. Or well, maybe it was a lemon, every company has them and customers only get crabby when they get one.
