1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 from North America - Comments

"A high priced piece of crap!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Turbo blew at 80,000 miles.

Water pump went bad.

Radio stopped working.

Aerodynamic fin stopped working.

Master cylinder needed to be replaced.

Lifters needed to be replaced.

Drive-shaft needed to be replaced.

Brakes went.

Exhaust cracked.

And many, many more problems that ran me about $12,000.00 in just 4 and 1/2 years that I owned it.

General comments?

This car is by far the worst car I have ever owned. It never performed even close to what it was built up to be. My brother's Ford Contour was quicker. Every month something would go wrong with the car and every time, like a dupe, I thought if I spent the money it would be worth it. Wrong! Not only did I spend a fortune on this car, but it wasn't even worth it. The ride was uncomfortable. The performance was about that of a Honda Civic and the speed, well, that was pretty much non-existent. I finally got rid of what was by far the worst decision yet in my life. This car was horrible!! In every way, shape and form a car can be.

I cannot imagine what kind of person it would take to leave a review like this. I have never met any one that has owned this model that would say "it was an expensive piece of crap". You have to expect things to break when you race a vehicle every time you drive it. Your experience with this fine automobile was probably due to lack of driver ability and lack of maintenance. You should probably consider sticking to a Ford Escort.

Yeah, I'd agree you should probably stick to that Ford Escort. You wouldn't know how to handle a beast like the 3000gt anyway.

I have had my GTO (Japanese model 3000GT) for two years and has only needed things doing that any other car would require. £6300 ($10,000) bought me a 300 bhp 4 wheel drive dream machine. If I had a £ for every time someoone said "Is it a Ferrari?" I would be a rich man. If you can't out accelerate a Honda ANY HONDA then you is doing something wrong my friend!!

Stick with your Ford Escort mate.

Come back to the GTO - 3000GT - when you can DRIVE HARD!!

I have to agree with the original writer. I brought a 92 VR4 back in 1999 with 80K miles on it. I think I had more problems than this guy.

Then again, I may have gotten a lemon. Regardless, the car was a money pit. The mechanic would always smile when they saw me drive up.. which was almost once a month. Something was going wrong and I was charged a monster premium because of the complexity of this car.

Finally, my VR4 was stolen while parked in front of my house in February of 2000. Since then I've stayed away from Mitsubishi. I have yet to purchase a used car which gave me the problems which the VR4 did.

Great performance. Amazing with the ladies. But the repairs were expensive and often.

So don't rag on the writer, I faced the same problems.

Dude, the 3000gt has got to be on eof the best hidden cars that are left in this world. NO joke everything else has been found. RX7's and Skylines? even the kids who only watch fast and the furious know what they are, 3000gts are a hidden treasure, and speed shouldn't be an issue considering they can tap 170 stock.. if you can't keep up with a honda you must have been moving at like 70... are you sure you don;t have a base mold with a vr4 sticker on it? mmmk pumpkin.

This kid probably beat the heck out of it, and now is whinning that the car is having problems. That's WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU RACE A CAR EVERYTIME YOU DRIVE IT!!

I don't know about all the problems that have been reported about the 92 3000 gt vr4, but I just took delivery of one with 85000 miles for $10,000. I expect to have to put some money in it, but it is a sexy car that is very fast, and a head turner. I had a kid come up to me a few days ago and say "I love your car" that never happened when I was in my celica, I figure if I keep up the maintenence and don't beat the $!$% out of it, Life is good.

I've also owned a 91' VR-4 for 3 years and have never had any of these problems. Too bad you can't keep up to a Contour considering it's a low 14sec car in the 1/4 bone stock.

Add a boost controller, gutted pre-cats, better Blow off-valve and your hitting low 13's. Go back to your Escort bud. You do realize this car needs regular maintenance that costs 2K every 60K miles. if it isn't done your going to have some serious problems.
