1998 Holden Commodore VT Series I Executive Wagon from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"A great, versatile and reliable car to drive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine oil leak at 70,000km.

Power steering oil leak at 65,000km.

General comments?

The Holden Commodore VT wagon is a pleasure to drive, as it handles smoothly and has a quiet interior.

Performance wise, the 3.6L V6 delivers plenty of power when required, aiding in overtaking maneuvers.

Having a relatively large engine, the VT wagon uses about 11-12L/100km which is reasonably ecnomical, especially for a car of its size.

Freeway driving is a pleasure as it cruises along with low RPM in top gear.

A VT commodore has a 3.8litre V6, not a 3.6 that is the new Alloytech V6 that has only just been released by Holden for the new VZ commodore range.

I’ve got a 3.8lt VT wagon with super low springs, 17x8in rims, a 2 ½ sports exhaust and the gearbox has billet corvette servos (stage 3 shift kit). With the car being so low with big wheels with sidewalls only 45mm high it has very little even no body roll, it handles better than any car I have driven. Even with a stock motor the exhaust has an awesome note to it. The shift kit is wound up pretty hard which jolts you around when it changes gear, but the car is pretty quick with only these mods. All up this car is great to drive, looks good and handles even better.

I bought a 1998 VT Commodore Executive Wagon at auction for $7,000.00 its GREAT, rock solid, I have now put over 200,000 kms on the damn thing and it is still crisp and reliable... admittedly these are highway kms, but still they are almost bulletproof.

What a cheap reliable bus that I can load heaps into... hard to beat.

Agree totally, I have the VX Acclaim with the 3.8L Ecotec motor. The thing I like about these cars are the cheap modifications that can be done to them that add huge bang for your buck.

I have a modified ECU with Custom CAI and a Stage 1 Trans shift Kit as well as being lowered with 18" Wheels and 40 profile tyres. This car with just those mods went from being a nice car to drive the family around in to being a highly responsive car to cruise on the weekends with heaps more pickup, handling and torque.

The amazing thing with todays technology is that everything I have done mechaniclly is reversable at the flick of a switch or the unplugging of a mod, this includes the auto shift kit which is also handled electronically.

I purchased a VT Acclaim wagon a few years ago; it's now done 290,000km's. Still going strong.

Holden NZ replaced the left side chassis rail due to rust, under warranty at 8 years old... cost them what I paid for the car to make the repairs. Great backup service from Holden NZ.

Has suffered a few oil leaks with the previous owner, and needed new diff bearings at 150,000km, and faulty c/lock solenoid, but nothing more major.

All in all very reliable, and superb to drive, and can be picked up at a good price. Huge rear luggage space is awesome - I always get comments when loading 2.4m sheets straight into the back at the timber yard. Best tip is to service regularly - oil, filters, fluids, and cooling system.

It's not really a comment, but I just want to know what motor oils you use?
