I have only had the truck for about 3 weeks, and nothing has gone wrong with it yet, except that the freon appears to have leaked out causing the AC to blow warm now.
I probably shouldn't be writing a review so soon after purchasing my truck, but I am so impressed with the way it drives and handles with 241,000 original miles on it that I had to write it down. I sold my previous truck which was a 1982 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton that also had 240,000 original miles. However, the Dodge felt worn out, loose, and used oil. The Toyota drives and feels like a new vehicle, uses no oil, and the original paint is still in excellent condition, 14 years after being built.
The truck runs great, is smooth, and very quiet.
The interior is comfortable, and still in decent condition, although the seats have a few small tears in the fabric. I will be installing seat covers. I purchased the regular cab because I was having a hard time finding an extended cab, which was my first choice. I wasn't particularly looking for a 4x4, but it's nice having it on the rare occasions when I might need that feature. (I own a 4x4 Blazer that has seen some use on my property, so I have some experience with them)
I just calculated the gas mileage today, and I am getting 23.3 miles per gallon, which beats the heck out of the 10 mpg I was used to getting in my full sized truck.
I hope to drive this thing 400-500 thousand miles like some Toyota's I have read about. This one seems to be off to a good start.
I am from Athens GA and have just bought a 1990 Toyota 4x4 with 171,000 original miles and everything that's been said about these trucks is true, they drive like a car even with all-terrain tires. I drove a jeep cherokee that has 230,000 miles on it and it was worn out at 130,000. I will never drive an American made automobile untill drastic improvements are made. For the money cars just do not last. There's a good chance that I will still be driving my Toyota when my neighbor's brand new explorer goes to the dump.
I own a 1990 Toyota xtra cab SR5 package 4X4 which I bought new. It still runs and looks like new. Original paint is flawless. I now have almost 300,000 kms. on this truck and I feel it is good for that many again. I am very faithful at doing regular maint. and I'm sure this is part of why this truck has been so reliable. I'll probably die still owning this vehicle because I cannot imagine what else I would be as happy with. Anyone interested in such a vehicle should defintely consider it as they will not be disappointed. Sorry mine however is not for sale.
Yours truly,
The Viperman from Candle Lake Sask. Canada.
Thanks to everyone for their comments. I am looking for a truck to replace my 98 jetta TDI with 175,00 miles that I purchased new. I just drove an 89 SR5 4x4 with 200,000 miles, spotless interior, and even blows cold air. I think I am sold on it.
