2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue GL from North America - Comments

"This car is a safety and financial nightmare for the average income household"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Transmission had to be replaced at 30,000 miles.

Driving lights flicker intermittently.

Service engine soon light comes on fairly often.

Vehicle stalls at low rpm.

General comments?

This car has become the most expensive vehicle for repairs and maintenance I have ever owned. The latest problem of stalling at low rpm, (approaching intersections, making turns into shopping areas with no power steering or brakes) has resulted in two close calls and numerous trips to the dealer replacing crankshaft sensor, fuel module, PCM, and catalytic component. The car still stalls! The dealer has no idea of how to fix the problem! I'm at wits end knowing I can't resell the car plus I am driving a vehicle with an unsafe problem that can't be fixed. Repairs have climbed to over $1500.00 and still more to come. Don't buy an Olds Intrigue!!!

My mother is having the same problem. "98" Intrigue. Wondering if you ever found a solution.

I read your comment on your car stalling when coming to stops. It sounds like the problem may be the Idle Air Control motor other wise known as I.A.C. what the I.A.C. is it is essentially a bypass valve. On the old carbureted cars there was an idle screw on the side on the carb to adjust idle and to let air through the throttle valve when it is closed. The I.A.C. is does the same thing. On the new fuel infected vehicles there is not an idle adjustment screw. When the throttle is all the way closed air can't get by the throttle plate. therefore a bypass valve is installed. When the car is idling this is when the I.A.C. operates. As we all know an engine needs air to breathe. It operates by pushing a pintle back and forth-to increase idle or to decrease the idle speed. The computer in the car or PCM receives a signal from the TPS (throttle position sensor) to open the IAC when the throttle is closed. To correct what sounds to be your problem you can take the valve off the throttle body spray some Air intake cleaner (not carb cleaner, it has to be air intake cleaner as it works best) and clean the carbon off ot the pintle the other possible cause is the IAC may be getting wore out. If this does not correct the problem the other cause may be the TPS sensor. If it is the sensor will have to be replaced as you can't service it as it is a sealed unit.
