2001 Daewoo Nubira CDX from North America - Comments

"The car is a nightmare"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Front Lower Control Arms replaced at 23,000 miles.

Front brakes worn out and were replaced at 23,000 miles. Front rotors had to be machined. Car has only highway miles.

You have to floor the brakes in order to stop the car even though the brakes are in good condition.

OEM Kumho tires wore out completely at 23,000 miles.

My car is unable to hold 4 wheel alignment despite keeping tires at manufacturers recommended 30 psi and rotating tires per factory recommended maintenance schedule.

Check Engine light on problems required several visits to the dealer to resolve.

The front seats make a creaking sound while driving which is very annoying.

The engine is very noisy and the gas mileage is very poor.

The paint on the car is fading in several areas which gives the car a blotchy appearance in the sunlight. The paint has also started peeling near the underside of the car.

The metal on the car is so thin that it dents very easily. This is a big safety concern.

There are very few dealers sevicing Daewoo's and they are very far from each other and there is no guarantee that they will fix your car. It is very frustrating and time consuming.

The car is very expensive to maintain and has to be taken to the dealer where it remains until they are able to get parts for it. I have spent a lot of money on rental cars and taxis.

I have tried to trade in the car, but the dealers either don't want it or they want to give me nothing for it.

I am praying that the car holds up until I pay off the auto loan.

General comments?

I will never buy a Daewoo again.

The Lack of spare parts is my biggest problem. So far I am waiting Two weeks for a Thermostat ordered from a main dealer. No other stat will fit as it is molded in a plastic case. I would not buy another Daewoo for this reason. The car is only 3 years old.

David.

This is an update to my original entry. At 40,000 miles the dealer had to put in a new set of front and rear brake pads (all worn out - I just do a few miles on the highway everyday without much stop and go traffic), replaced a hose (leaking coolant) at 34,000 miles the dealer replaced the valve cover gasket (oil leak), replaced the serpentine belt (cracked), replaced the driver's side weatherstrip (cracked in several places), replaced the drivers side front seat cover (fabric had completely worn through), installed new dash clips (left side dash kept coming off). The repair charges put me out several hundred dollars. This car just keeps on consuming money and time. By the time I've paid off my car note I probably will have spent several thousand dollars on repairs, rental cars and taxis. This car can bankrupt a middle class person. I will stick to Toyota next time.

I've had my Nubira for 3 1/2 years and have put 43K miles on it. I haven't had any mechanical problems. I finally replaced the OEM tires at 39K miles. I agree it's no Toyota, but then it didn't cost as much either. I've got my fingers crossed that it will last a long time (100K miles?) since there is no trade-in value.

I have had my car for 3 1/2 years and it was a good car until about 8,000 miles when the engine light came on and ended up doing so 3 more times after that. I have had it in the shop several times and finding parts is a nightmare. The nearest shop that even can get parts and do the labor is 45 miles away from my house and I have had to spend money for rental cars as well. My seats squeak too and the inside of my door handles are peeling. I have recently had the sway bar links and control arm bushings replaced which was very expensive and while visiting the shop for that reason, I was told that the timing belts on these cars have been breaking between 40,000 and 50,000 miles so I am also "looking forward" to fixing this too. I just think that there is no reason a car that is only 5 years old should be having this much trouble. I would never buy another car like this and I am finally becoming "unburied" in it as far as the loan goes. I will be so happy to get of this pile!

This is another update to my original entry. This car has been serviced regularly per manufacturers requirements by the selling dealer (one of only two dealers in the entire state still servicing Daewoo's and more than 40 miles one way). This car does a few highway miles a day and is garaged. At 41,000 miles all four replacement Hankook tires wore out and were replaced by four brand new Hankook tires (the only brand readily available at that time to replace the original Kumho's which came with the new car). At 54,000 miles the heating system quit (in the dead of winter) and there was a clunking sound under the car. The dealer had to remove the dash to replace the heater core and replace both lower control arms. These repairs cost me close to $ 800. At 57,000 miles there was a throbbing sound coming from the engine. The dealer replaced the timing belt, water pump, pulleys, tensioner and also had to perform front brake service. These repairs also cost me around $ 825. At 60,000 miles the replacement car battery (second one) quit and a new car battery (third one) was installed along with spark plugs and new wires which set me back another $ 300.00 At 61,000 miles the passenger side power window quit working and a new regulator had to be put in for $ 225.00. Just a week later the rear driver side power window quit and a new regulator had to be put in for $ 215.00. I can't wait to dump this money pit. By the time I finally payoff my auto loan for this car in a few months I could have probably been better off buying a luxury brand!!!

I have had this car since 2005 and it has around 97,000 miles on it. The gas mileage stinks. Getting parts for it are extremely difficult!!! I live in Kansas City and the nearest Dearer to get parts for it is 80 miles away and parts are extremely expensive. It has not broke down often, but, when it does it is expensive to fix and local auto part stores do not carry Service manuals manuals or parts for this vehicle. This vehicle is becoming more of a nightmare the longer I own it. I am looking forward to paying it off and trading it in.
