I got this car from my grandfather who had only driven it about 33000 in the 11 years that he owned it so it had some problems from just sitting around.
When I got the car, the ABS light was on. The dealer told me it was the main valve body and it would cost $850 to replace.
The car will die at stoplights if the fuel tank reads 6 or below gallons. The dealer said there was a technical service bulletin out for the tank. The bulletin said that the baffles in the tank could fail causing stalling. The dealer wanted over $800 to replace the tank, pump, and sending unit.
The trunk lid pull down switch quit working.
The fuel pressure regulator is failing and the dealer wanted $175 to replace that.
The dealer told me that the master cylinder was leaking and needed replaced for over $800.
Overall, the dealer wanted to charge me over $3000 for parts and labor to fix things on a 11 year old car, with only 34000 miles on it. I told him he was crazy because the car is not even worth that much. I had him replace 3 hard to reach heater hoses and change the oil for about $200. Then, I drove away.
This is a great riding car which has good power and really makes long trips easy.
Stay away from dealers with your older Cadillac. They will really try and take you to the cleaners!
My 91 De ville story is similar. I received it sometime around the year 2001. It had 39000 miles. I have since been driving it for three years and now have 91,000 miles. I agree with you on all counts about comfort and power. And I have had all the same problems with my car about ABS lights and fuel tank baffles. I removed my tank and cleaned it. The baffle had come unglued and was rolling around in the tank. It was impossible to access or see it. I replaced the dirty fuel filter, put on a new pump just for the hell of it, and reinstalled the tank. Now, I fix the stalling problem by keeping it filled with at least 6 gallons. The ABS light can stay on for all I care since the brakes work fine in every other way. I had to replace the upper radiator hose as it had rotted. It is located in a very hot spot above the engine and takes a lot of heat. I also had four injectors loose resistance, and the car would not run worth a damn. I replaced all 8 myself and paid $800 for the parts. I have also required new front rotors, pads, & tires, and otherwise, the headliner is flapping in the breeze like a damn flag and needs to be re-glued. Despite the comfortable ride, it is hard for me to adjust to the lethargic handling of this Cadillac, and with maintenance bullshit like this, it is easy to see why Japanese automakers are walking all over GM.
We own a 1992 Cadillac DeVille, and love it. It currently has 280,000kms on it, and we've done the gas tank baffle repair, and replaced the rad hose. We had the air conditioner retrofitted, and new, sensor free shocks installed, removing the bulb from the dash warning light. Car is beautiful to drive and we love. It does, however, have another problem which gives it a personality. We have taken to calling it 'Cruella' (as in DeVil) because sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. If we wait 3 minutes, it will usually start, and we've been told this is a security system problem, a key chip problem, or a ignition cylinder problem. Since these repairs are more than we can afford at this moment, we build "wait" time into our outings so we can wait for our recalcitrant witch to reset. Hopefully, the problem remains intermittent. Does anyone know about replacing the keys for a Cadillac?
I just purchased a 1992 Sedan De Ville, and the truck pull-down was unhooked because the old lady that had it didn't like it. I don't know where it is or how to hook it back up, could you help me out. My email is bigmann_tkl7755@yahoo.com.

PS: I LOVE MY CADDY! Definitely the way to go, but you're right about the parts being so expensive, but I think it is worth it.
I have a 1992 De Ville that I just had the gas tank and fuel pump removed and replaced at a very inexpensive cost.. the tank was 99.00 at advance autoparts and fit the car perfectly and also the fuel pump was only 75.00...a total break from the dealers cost of 978.00...I love my cadillac and will continue driving it as long as it goes.. if you have anymore questions please email me at tnblueydbear78@aol.com...thanks..Jason.
Hey I love my caddy. I've got a 1992 Cadillac Sedan Deville. It is my life. I have put over 4 grand into her. She runs great!
I have the same gas tank problem that everybody else has. But I put performance parts on mine, and they're way more pricey than the dealer.
I use mine to drag race the streets with, and now I'm having tranny problems. Well if anybody knows where to get performance parts, hit me back?

The only reason your having tranny problems is because drag racing puts a lot of stress on a tranny, especially an automatic one that was build for a smooth ride, not harsh quick gear changes. Anyway if you disconnect the TPI unit you will free up some more horsepower and torque, I haven't done that to my Caddi considering I don’t drag race. It has more than enough stock power. But I’m all for street drag racing in a American car just keep crushing those cheap plastic econo Honda's.
Okay I have the same problem with my 92 deville the stalling and dying, but it doest happe at 6 gallons it will happen at 9 or 12 now. Plus that thing sucks more gas than ay other cadillac I've ever owned. My wife hates the car, I like the smoothness of the ride and I was happy to have a cadillac without the Northstar engine electrical nightmares. Now this car is unsafe for my family. Can anyone say that the stalling problem is 100% fixed with the replacement of the fuel tank and pump?
I bought a 1992 Cadillac DeVille recently with 55,000 miles on it. Yes, the repairs are expensive! The digital dash literally crashed and burned ($800 at the Cadillac dealer, my mechanic wouldn't touch it!). The brakes failed ($800 - new master cylinder, and many other brake related parts). New transmission (got this under warranty thank God) and finally a new water pump ($500).
I bought the car for my 17 year old son... he loves it and thinks its really cool... we especially like the gimmicky light monitors and opera lamps. It's in beautiful cosmetic condition including the leather interior which is pretty much flawless including the driver's seat.
The stalling problem mentioned is interesting and it has stalled on us twice for no apparent reason in the three months we have had it... now I know to keep the gas tank relatively full (not easily done... she's a thirsty beast averaging 15 mpg.)
I bought a 1992 Sedan De Ville. It had some front end damage. I fixed it and had it parked for a month or so. It ran great before I parked it, and then when I went back to start it up, it started fine. But while I was driving it, you could not give it much fuel at all, it would not take it, it would just cut the power out. I had the fuel tank cleaned, new fuel filter, cleaned the lines out, injectors cleaned and also had someone change the fuel pump. Don't know for sure if they did or not, because it is doing the same thing, but after cleaning the things up, it runs a little better for a couple days, and then back to the same way... IF ANY ONE COULD HELP ME?
