1989 Chrysler New Yorker Landau (loaded) from North America - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have an 1989 New Yorker. When I first aquired it, it was very reliable. Through my own personal neglect, I have had to replaced the motor and transmission around 165000k miles.

At this time, the motor burnt oil so bad, I used the excuse 'it got a new quart everyday'. Don't fool yourself, this motor will run forever if you stick to routine check ups. I paid over $2000 to fix this car, but it was neglect, not wear. I only blame myself.

General comments?

The New Yorker was meant for comfort, not handling. The next time you get upset at someone driving too slow around the curves, its probably the car not the driver. I drive hard, but this car cannot handle well in turns. Sorry for being a slow poke, heh:)

However, I will take on any driver with his/her crazy looking honda, neon, or whatever Rice Rocket. I will blow your doors off, period!!

I'm not invincible: My friend Don has a 1973 Pontiac GTO with a 400cid engine. I can hold my own with him till about 65mph, and he destroys me: (

Torque is everything, which Rice Rockets lack!

This is in response to the "rice burner" reference. The standard engine in the '89 New Yorker is the 3.0 liter SOHC V-6 engine from MITSUBISHI. I know this because my former in-laws bought one new in 89. Chrysler wised up and started using their own engine in 90 (3.3L V-6). As for the oil burning issue, this is a common problem with this engine.

As a former Chrysler Service Manager, let me clarify a few things. First: while Mitsubishi made the 3.0, it never reached production before Chrysler made numerous changes to the design. Among the 60 or so changes: the degree of v in the V-6 layout, and the fact that the valves will not contact the pistons when the timing belt breaks or skips. It is correct to say that the three liter is a Japanese engine, but it never would have been so good without substantial assistance from Chrysler.

After some checking, It it clear that my car does indeed have a 3.0 Mitsubishi:P And it would appear that my 89' New Yorker is a Rice Rocket itself: (

Maybe I should paint my New Yorker Lime Green with bright Yellow Dragon-shaped decals down the side. Ill need to add an EXTRA tall spoiler to the rear. I should buy some 36" rims with Re-treads glued to it. This crap should make my car faster right?? How about some neon lights under the frame, or a crown on the dash?? Maybe if I watch "The Fast and the Furious" enough, I'll create my own look.

All sarcasm aside, I guess I'm old school, and thought my car was American made. I was wrong: (

Personally, love the American made V8, gas guzzling, 4bbl engines. Gimme a 69'Chevelle 454 anyday. Back when the tricks went into the performance, not the paint!!

Markus.

PS:I will still leave your colorful Neon, Escort, Civic, or whatever in the dust with my New Yorker.

I liked that 3.0 -- As a kid, I flogged a late-80s New Yorker with one. It made blue smoke when cold and when idling, but it didn't hesitate to charge off.

It was a fairly light car with the most comfortable seats I ever sat in, all-wheel disc-brakes, and super-soft shocks. While the car wallowed in a hard-corner, I could otherwise rip over potholes and such with wild abandon.

Unfortunately, other than the seats, the rest of the interior was Chrysler Cheapo Craptastic (tm). I.e., despite looking good, it fell apart if you stared cross eyed at it.

I managed to unload it before too many dash gadgets stopped working.
