"A family/first car performer with a bullet proof engine"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Only the usual day to day things.

Brake pads, suspension, timing belt.

Distributor at 210,000 my fault though.

Exhaust system cat rusted out at around 200,000ks.

Clutch at 210,000ks.

All up over the last 5 years this car would have only cost me around $Au3,000 in repairs, including modifications to the engine etc.

General comments?

Overall this has been one of the best cars I have driven.

At standard the car handled very well, great performance and extremely reliable.

Now, after the exhaust, brakes, suspension, air intake and engine were worked on, this car is a dream to drive and extremely quick for the size of its engine - 8.4sec to 100. It has also sat in the shed for six months and started first time. For the price of these cars now, it's great value for money.

I drive this car in Australia - it is really a good car.

I love it, Martin.

I have purchased an '86 Pintara GX as my first car. It's done 188,000 kms, and the engine runs better than my parent's 2000 VT commodore. I plan to modify the extraction/exhaust systems, so if anyone is willing to give me some tips, rooscout@hotmail.com.

I own a 1987 Nissan Pintara GLi. It is a great car to drive it had done 265000km when I blew the engine. I replaced that engine thanks to Grand Auto Wreckers in Adelaide. They deal in just Nissan/Datsun parts. I'd go back to them if I ever need any part for my cars. I suggest you try them for any performance parts you need. They are based in Adelaide ring 83826006 if you need anything for your Nissan. My car has a 5 speed manual in it which is so cool. It gives great power and economy and for a 4cyl it runs a great time up the quarter mile. Mine does it in around 16.5 seconds and all that has had done to it is a set of extractors. Hard engines to break although burnouts at 7500 rpm will do it quite easily just in case you want to try it. Car gets anywhere between 9.5-10 litres per 100km if driven sensibly in town. If your like me you can expect about 12 litres per 100km when you give it a bit of boot. On the Highway it gets anywhere between 9-9.5 litres per 100km (you gotta love overdrive gear). Interious is basic, but attracitve. Speedo, Tacho, Interiour lights, adjustable steering column, power mirrors. Comfortable seats, although mine is a bit low on padding now, but get it restuffed and it will be smick as again. Small bits of rust appearing on the car now, but is still as straight as theday it rolled off the construction line. Overall a great car to drive, rally or drag whatever the pleasure. If you need any help with you Pintara just email me, I'm always willing to help people with a passion for Pintara's. My address is KAT1986@ozemail.com.au Just msg me if you need information. If I can't answer your question then I can always look it up in my workshop manual.

I've owned two 87 GX Pintara's over the last year and a half and while I've had my share of the standard car troubles there are a few that stand out to be Pintara particular problems.

The dashboards are frequently inaccurate. The heat sensor in particular died in both vehicles if they weren't used frequently. (every 2nd day at least). The next common problem between the two would be the odometer, which tended to skip jump and stop altogether in both vehicles (something to be naturally worried about.

Overall have never been disappointed by the performance of the engine, however they do tend to overheat. I haven't been driving that long so I don't know if there are effective modifications that can be made to prevent this without the police pinging (canary) the vehicle.

The cars themselves however are cheaper than my dvd collection. I picked my 1987 Sapphire blue Pintara gx wagon for $450 off a granny. Had 100, 000 on the odometer, (105 now) total repairs have cost me $120, 0-100 in 10seconds, but does spring the occasional oil leak.

Fun car to own and work on if you are a uni student or tinkerer.

Hey guys. Just brought my first car, and yep you guessed it, it's an 87 Pintara. Everything's fine, the car drives extremely well, simply a dream. Except for one thing; it won't run on 4 cylinders. Does anyone know of a common problem that would cause this. If so please email me at... somewheredifrent@hotmail.com... cheers

Any help will be appreciated.
