1993 Nissan D21 Pickup from North America - Comments

"An inexpensive reliable truck"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The paint has not held up well over the years, but with the desert sun it is understandable.

No major problems aside from regular maintenance(i.e. brakes, oil changes, etc.)

General comments?

This truck is an absolute beast! At over 140,000 miles, it is as reliable as the day I drove it off the lot.

The engine still provides decent acceleration and runs smoothly.

The battery life has been extraordinary in my experience. I had one last 6 years in the Arizona heat, which is unheard of out here for any car or truck.

My D21 is the torque lovers dream. Just yesterday managed to pull my 16.5 tonne Jcb quick enough to bump start it with the gnarly Nissan, but finding it difficult to bring her top speed up.

Has anyone out there experienced problems with the hubs on the front end? If so, how did you deal with it? Get in touch at e-mail: "forkit_sw@btinternet.com"

Customised mine with extreme wide boy kit so it does the job at work and at play. any other enthusiasts out there?

My Nissan Pick-up D-21 has over 140,000 and it runs great. It still has good acceleration it never over heated on my Grandpa or me. I take it down the hill in high heats and it doesn't even come close to overheating. We got it from my grandpa who passed away a year ago. My dad was driving it home one day and it just quit running. He started it back up and ran for a couple of seconds and died; so he started back up again and barely pushed on the gas and kept it running. He drove it until the tags expired and it sat for two years. So I said to my dad, "Can you go get me some starting fluid so I can see if it has an intake leak?" So I got in the truck, started it and kept it running at one speed. My dad sprayed starting fluid by the intake and it picked up idle speed. So we ordered the gasket; I put it on and started it up. It runs great. I was happy. Since I fixed it it runs like it was brand new.

I have a 93 nissan 4WD 5 spd with 140k miles runs strong, like new, but a have a problem with the fuel economy is very high, it's like 9 miles per gallon, I took it to the dealer, everthing is perfect, and they said it's normal, in the D21, I live in mexico, I just can't find a good mechanic to help me out, my nissan burn more gas than a V8, I have changed O2 sensor, air filter EGR valve mass air flow sensor, platinum spark plugs, sparkplugs wires, and nothing changes there's not lights on the panel like check engine and stuff the truck works perfectly, please any help please write to magodeoz@tmail.com.

I live in the north east my 1993 pick up has 93000 miles and the front left steel brake line rotted and broke as I was coming to a stop sign. had no brakes at all! thank god I replaced my emer. brake cable or I would be here today. after fixing that line I found the rear line was also in bad shape. op on changing that line my fuel lines started leaking. check those line and fix your emer. brakes.

I have a '93 D21 and absolutely love it. It has 175,000 miles on the odometer and the only problem I have had with it so far is the front hubs used to "pop" and slip occasionally. This problem was remedied by replacing the stockers with ones from Superwinch. The factory front hubs didn't appear to look all that rugged. The Superwinch ones are far superior and don't cost an arm and a leg. The other problem happened at about 130,000 miles when I had to replace an air conditioner line. This pickup has served me well. Sure, at 175,000, the engine isn't as strong as it was when I first bought it, but it burns no oil and I still pull a small cargo trailer occasionally with it as well as haul a ATV. I'm very religious about my oil changes and I feel that this has kept this vehicle from preforming flawlessly in my opinion. I'm running 31 inch tires and the drive train doesn't seem to be stressed. I'm also the EMS supervisor for our fire department and have outfitted my truck with strobes and radios. This doesn't stress the electrical system at all and I'm lit up like a Christmas tree when running code. Any other D21 enthusiasts can contact me at: brian@mvaaradio.com.

I purchased my D21 pickup in about 04, it had about 93000 miles on it, She ran like a charm. At about 98000 miles the clutch went out, no problem. At about 113000 miles the starter died. Other than those problems she has ran fine every time, and doesn't burn any oil. Yeah the clear coat paint is peeling around the hood, and on top of the cab, but she needs a new paint job anyways. Even after I rear-ended, someone, she still runs the same as before. I might also add, that with only a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder with a manual, shes a fast treat. Right about 112500 miles, she also started getting a deep throaty growl from the exhaust, which makes her sound and feel excellent. In the future, I'm going to drop her down 3 inches on 17's, put air ride suspension on her. And maybe drop a 350 v8 into her.

My 93 D21 pickup is dying... it's got 180k plus miles and is beat up, rusted out... I don't know if it's the transmission, starter, ignition switch etc.. I have it in the shop right now... it doesn't start once it drops below 30 degrees, which is a problem in Iowa winters... sooo that's my experience.. I loved it while it worked, but now I hate its guts.

I've owned mine since new. Very dependable truck. Nice and simple. Starter is the only thing to go bad and I rebuilt it for $20. The bad news: the frame is rusting out. I've welded it several times but it sure doesn't bode well. I hear toyota just did a major recall for frame rust and it would be nice if nissan would fix us up also.
