1971 Plymouth Fury III from North America - Comments

"This is the best first car I owned"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The alternator was rebuilt.

Recored the radiator quite a few times.

Fixed with the engine timing to 10 degrees before top dead center.

Had the heads worked on for unleaded gas.

Transmission rebuilt twice.

Analog clock keeps breaking (its real hard to find a working one)

Both lower ball joints replaced.

Replaced the speedometer the old one made a chiming sound and a bouncy needle.

Air conditioning doesn't work.

Rebuilt the 2210 holly carburetor a few times.

General comments?

Putting electric ignition on it was the thing I did.

Body still looks great for a 56,000 mile car.

Still has the spare tire from 71 with about 13.5 psi.

The dash is perfect.

You can get kits to convert those old clocks to quartz movements, much easier than trying to keep the old electromechanical ones working.

You may want to consider getting another spare tire to have in case you actually get a flat. It's real cool to still have the original spare with 1971 air in it, but if you ever needed to actually use it you are likely to find that after 30+ years the rubber has deteriorated, making it unsafe to put on the road.

Hey there

I Have a Plymouth Fury III that I am rebuilding.

Started out thinking I just needed a water pump

then I got in I found I need a timing chain set (upper gear was well worn)..

We replace the fuel pump and fuel because we were there.

We took the radiator and had it resealed

then we replaced the point and condenser.

Next I replaced the Spark plugs

when I started it up it was only firing on 4 cylinders, but running

I checked the firing order (1-8-6-5-4-3-7-2,) and found that on the distributer cap someone had 8-3 and 6-7 were backwards

now that I have fixed this it is running like a kitten

not bad for a small investment.

I've had a plymouth fury 3 for about 5 years now. I bought it with 70000 miles, it has 82000 now. Had to replace the points, wheel cylinder, fuel pump, hoses, water pump, and alternator. I recored the radiator, rebuilt the transmission and put a shift kit in, put a 4 bbl edelbrock intake and 4 barrel edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor on it. The clock doesn't work, the fuel gauge doesn't work, it has an exhaust leak, and the heater switch went out. Seems like for everything I fix 5 more things break. I love it though. Body is decent and the interior is near flawless except for a crack in the dash and torn seat on driver's side. MOPAR forever.

I usually get my parts from the local parts store... unless they don't carry them. Then I go to the wrecking yard. Or find another mopar fanatic. By the way, I need a fuel sending unit for a plymouth fury 3. Can't find one anywhere.

My father bought the 2-door, vinyl top model in '71 and I learned to drive in that car - got my license in '82. I drove the thing into the ground until the car was sold in late '88. Several months later I was driving through a beach town with my girlfriend at the time and SAW my old car on the driveway of a huge mansion. We drove up the driveway just to look at it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's still running somewhere! We took "Das Boot" or "The Party Boat" everywhere, even after the AM radio konked out. Imagine the joy of 8 (Yes, it sat 8 - tightly - but still.) people, stoned out of their minds, singing songs on the way back to campus after a night of wild escapades. The Party Boat was intended to be a "family car" but was born to be a cruising vessel. =C.A. Cozmik=

I have a 71 Fury Gran Coupe that was my first car. I was 12 then and now 18. About 3 years ago I stripped it down and put the body on a 81 Ram 1500 frame. Its not running yet, but I'm working on it. I have saved a lot of the old parts that I'm not going to use so if anyone needs something, contact me at hotrod_ethan@hotmail.com.
