2000 Toyota Avensis SE from UK and Ireland - Comments

"No family man can fault it!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The battery in the remote central locking key died through the battery running out, normal key operation is fine. Had something done to the steering rack when I bought it, not quite sure what, but an error with the power steering seems to be a trait of this particular age Avensis.

General comments?

Dealer support has been very good, and inspiring although we were late picking the car up it was due to unforeseen circumstances with the power steering.

Lovely looking car bought it in silver and looks stunning when a layer of turtle wax is added.

A typical Estate which seems to have moisture drawn to the rear window at any speed, can be combated mostly with the heated screen or purchasing some ‘rainx’ from your local halfords etc which is wax for your windscreens.

Interior is functional, but not particularly pretty on the SE, looking into some new fascias for the temperature controls etc.

A great family car, and accommodates the kids perfectly including chunky 3 wheel push chairs, one of the only cars I’ve found that lets you put modern, new car seats in the back without the seat belt being at full stretch (which apparently isn’t safe).

Smooth engine, unbelievably quiet, well geared gearbox and cruises beautifully even at the fun side of 100mph.

I want to say that I also bought a Toyota Avensis 2000 about 6 months ago and the problem you mentioned about the steering rack is applicable to my car too.

At times, when you turn the steering wheel, even slightly, it is accompanied by a whining sound.

Apart from the above stated observation, there is no other major problem that has been identified by me yet. The interior is comfortable and the car is a beauty to behold.

I too have a problem, albeit rather minor, with the steering rack/column in as much as there is a slight clunk or knock which is just audible when going from lock to lock. This situation although not common does appear on several Internet discussion groups and I was wondering if anyone knew of any recall or after-sales repair. I have spoken to my local dealer and they know nothing of such problems. Apart from that my 1999 SE 1.8 is probably the best car I have ever owned from the reliability point of view.
