2003 Nissan Tino SE from UK and Ireland - Comments

"A bargain MPV"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Recalled by Nissan for rear seat belt modification. Rear seat belts were then too long to allow child's seat to be safely fitted. Seat could not be tensioned, and was therefore too loose. Nissan UK very helpful in solving problem, and communicating with my local dealer. Problem now solved.

Gear changes involving 3rd gear are sometimes 'clunky'. Almost as though clutch is not fully disengaging the gearbox, and 3rd gear is being forced in. Demo model I drove was much slicker in the gear change area.

Dashboard is vibrating. Appears as though felt anti-vibration strips are missing.

In recent very cold weather the outside temperature indication failed. Became stuck at -6.Now reads -2 degrees whatever the weather.

All of the above faults are to be checked out at the first service next week.

General comments?

Car is very pleasant to drive.

Very little body roll whilst cornering (contrary to most road tests!).

Excellent value when purchased brand new. Only paid £10995 including metallic paint.

Standard specification very good. Air conditioning, electric sunroof/windows/mirrors, CD player, ABS, driver/passenger & side air bags all standard.

Poor fuel consumption. In general driving have only ever achieved between 30 and 31 miles per gallon regardless of driving conditions. A 200 mile journey to Cornwall still only produced 31.3 mpg. Nissan to check out engine management at service.

I agree with most of the comments on this review. I have a 2003 Tino, I also find 3rd Gear changes feel as if the gearbox doesn't engage fully and then grinds. I find the engine a bit noisy, and I especially notice it I hear it drive off down the road (if I'm out of the car and someone else is driving it). The trim rattles, but I think that's because all the internal panels are push fit. I love the car, and would recommend it highly to everyone looking for a fun family car (or small MPV).

I Have just purchased a Nissan Tino 1800cc SE.2003 model from a Nissan garage. The vehicle runs well. I have only have a couple of complaints.

1. There is not enough adjustment on the drivers seat for me.

2. Petrol consumption is poor (25 miles mpg) I have just returned from the garage where purchased, and they have said they have checked the system... hope it does better now!

Had my Nissan Tino Hurricane 2.2Td for almost three years now and it seems things are now starting to go wrong. First the window wipers wouldn't park then I couldn't stop them once started, this involved having the whole wiper motor replaced would have cost around £200 had it not been under warranty. I see from the internet that others have had the same problem. Now it is in the garage again some two weeks later requiring a new turbo unit and engine management control unit. I wouldn't mind, but the service provided by the local dealer lacks any urgency or customer focus. Having waited six hours for it to be repaired I was told that the wrong part had arrived and it would have to stay in the garage indefinately until they can sort it out. No body seems to want to take ownership or keep you informed you are always having to chase things along. I have been in touch with Nissan head office, but they are no better. So that's the last Nissan I will be buying, although in saying that apathy seems to abound whichever car brand you require repairing it seems to be a British trait, except of course when you are buying a new vehicle then they can't do enough for you.

I have a Tino 2.2 DCI SE (extra) basically it's a SVE without the satellite navigation. The car is only 1 year and 1 month old, bought from brand new. It has been into the garage in excess of 6 times in relation to an immobiliser fault. Eventually the garage decided to replace the ignition system as they could not find the fault. It has also had a new turbo charger unit, the air intake hole was not large enough and it blew its own hole eventually sestroying the unit completely. Its also had new wiring under the gear box (poor connection and there has now been a modified wire introduced apparently). Other bits and pieces have been tweeked whist the car was in for these repairs. In my immediate family we have 4 Nissans all under 2 years old. 2x Tinos (new turbo new ignition and new fuel pump) 1x Primera (new ignition system, new fuel pump), and 1x micra (new ignition system). This is clearly not acceptable. When my car is going well, its great, if not unusual. Would not recommend Nissan to anyone.

All Renault engines you will notice. Nissan engines pre 2003 never missed a beat...ever. Renault unreliability is ruining Nissan's reputation.

Bought my Tino 1.8s 4 months ago. Just checked the fuel economy and it was 29.1mpg. I am shocked at how poor it is on fuel, think I would have been better buying a big 4x4.

The extra space and rear seat flexibility is great though and the kids love it, so it does make an extremely good MPV for those on a budget (although the fuel bills will soon munch the rest of the budget you saved on the purchase)
