1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout from North America - Comments

"A non typical antique car."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Valve cover gasket leaked as expected, so I replaced it.

Front control arm bushings were replaced twice.

Rear springs sagged, so I put in air shocks.

Gear shifter would not go into 1st gear which was fixed after I bought it.

Still has a ticking when idling, I'll dump some Lucas oil treatment in it and see what happens.

General comments?

It is a fun mid sized car that gets all kinds of looks when I cruise around. I have all kinds of room in the back. I was looking for an old car to fix up and have found out that AMC's are getting more and more popular. I only drive it in the summer so it won't rust out like thousands of other daily driven ones had. Unfortunately was hit by a Subaru last year. They don't build them like the used to. A great reliable summer driven daily driver.

Better check the tops of the front fenders--AMC put a rubber shield up there to try to protect the metal, but all it did was to catch and hold water+dirt and made the fender rust like crazy, besides all the other places that Hornets tended to rust out.
