1993 Ford Thunderbird LX from North America - Comments

"Junk it before it swallows your wallet!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Head gasket blew at 93,000 miles. Ford said only the 94 and 95 models had recalls so I replace the motor. $3,000 w/18 month unlimited mile warranty thru Cloverleaf Engines. (Better than the original!!)

Transmission went out a 143,000 miles, replaced, cost $600 (friend did it in the alley)

Headlight wiring harness caught fire just after the warranty expired due to being smashed between the radiator and the mount. Ford said they woudnt fix it untill I threatend w/a law suit and stop payment on my loan. Then they did a hack job anyway.

Front suspension replaced 5 times. Now it is completely shot and unrepairable. I just keep driving it.

Turn signal assembly melted 4 times, head light switch melted 3 times, fog lights stopped working after warranty expired. Driver seat kept ripping in the same place, by the lever, replaced 2 times.

Water pumps, alternator, ect. to numerous to count.

General comments?

What a peice of junk. The 3.8L motor is to weak to pull the car w/the air on. The alternater is to small to run all accessories at the same time while using your head lights. I would not recommend a t-bird to anyone. It's a good thing they stopped production. Oh, one more thing, the climate control flashed on and off, but works great and the car has started every day for 11 years, even when it was 20 below and I left it in the driveway! and my headlights finally stopped working altogether so I bought a new car.

Unfortunate that you have had so much trouble with your T-Bird. I have a '93 LX with the 3.8 Liter V-6 and it has made it to 252,000 before the transmission just let go. The only issues I have had is that the headlight switch has had to be replaced three times (Ford paid for the first two times), and the brakes/rotors wear down fast. Otherwise, only normal wear and tear for a car with close to 300,000 miles on it. I plan on replacing the transmission and using it as a back up car. I just purchased a '94 with 28,000 original miles and will use it as my main car, and my '93 as a backup since I commute 175 miles a day to work. I love my Thunderbird. Wish you had the same experience. Thunderbirds do make a mountain curve fun!

I’m sorry to hear about your experience with you car.. I bought one in May, and I’m totally loving it!!I bought it for $500 and the air is ice cold and it runs like a champ (original motor and tranny) My alternator doesn’t dim my lights at all even with the air on, the light on my stereo system (1800w amp), and my neons. I’ve had quite a few vehicles from Toyota tercel to Nissan Z’s and I have to say this thunderbird is the coolest one of them all.
