Front brakes, transmission, A/C went out, steering squeals when you turn. Muffler has come loose, window seal leaks and falls off.
Cheap junk that needs to be recalled, by far the worst car I have ever owned. I thought my Neon was junk which it was but this car is worse than that. Ford will NOT fix problems with their cars, I have been back now three times with the transmission and it still slips and rubs when shifting gears. Front brakes are already out.
I would like to say that anyone having problems with their ZX2 must not know how to treat their car. I drive a tow truck and have not towed one ZX2 since they came out and nor has anyone I work with.
I'm the VERY proud owner of a 2000 ZX2 S/R which just loves to go out and smoke the import cars almost as much as those ugly Focus things...
VERY GOOD JOB FORD... it's good to see Ford putting some power and finess behind a once boring Escort.
I just recently had to purchase tires for my 1999 ZX2, believe it or not even though the car came with 14 inch wheels I have 15 inch (upgraded) between 99-149.99 per tire. I am just sick, I think I am done with the ZX2, it eats up gas like it is a tank, and slips and slides all over the place in the rain and snow.
I am done!!!!
You sound very frustrated... Write Ford and tell them about where you got the car and EVERY problem you have had with the car AND the dealer. If they don't respond, write them again. Something will be done.
I suggest this to ALL of you who have been having problems with your ZX2, and the dealer won't do anything about it.
It sounds like all of you people who are complaining about this car could be from the same region. If so, That in-particular factory is to blame and the dealers are sick of the customer come backs and are starting to be dis-agreeable.
There are better ways to deal with this problem than an all-out boycott.
I'm having big time problems with my 1999 ZX2. I only have 46,000 miles on my car. The transmission is completely shot. It's not the dealer that you'll have problems with, it's Ford itself. It's going to cost about $3000.00 to have my car fixed which is my only form of transportation. I've read quite a few of these and see that the transmissions definitely have a problem with these makes and models. I think it's Ford's fault not the dealers.
I've spoken to Ford several times and they tell me it's not there problem, it's mine. They tell me the decision can't be over turned and to deal with it. Then they tell you that they value their customers. Yeah right!
The dealer is trying to work with me. They said they will try to contact Ford also.
I don't drive my car hard and have regular maintenance done on it such as oil changes and such. I do know how to drive.
Your best bet is to call the Better Business Bureau. That's what I did. They might not be able to do anything, but if more people write them they will see that there is a definite problem.
I will never buy another Ford.
Bought a 2000 ZX2 for my daughter a college car. Great performance and 30+ mpg. I drive the car to work when she is home for summer. Have experienced engine vibration but seems to be a common theme with this model. We noticed most of the cars we looked at had the problem to some degree. Is bearable since only noticeable when idling. My sons are already asking if they can have the car when my daughter is done. She says she is keeping the car!
Just a few comments for those of you who having been having problems with your trans, my fly wheel was a faulty which caused my trans to blow, so ford paid to put a brand new one in with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. My ZX2 is a 2000 with 60,000 miles!
Megan.
I own a 2000 ZX2 which I purchased for my eldest daughter last year. She turned it down 'cause it was standard and I decided to keep it for myself. Since then my F350 crew cab truck has been gathering dust 'cause this car is just what I needed for my mid-life crisis. Hadn't owned a car since 1977 but I won't give this one up. Performance chip, changes I've made using info. taken from forums, and reprogramming the computer have resulted in a really fast ZX2 and still getting over 32 mpg. Problems? not a one and I run my car VERY hard. Top speed is now in excess of 126 mph and will soon be exceeding that. New tires are on order to handle these speeds and fresh paint 'cause I want it not 'cause it's needed. See 'ya in my rearview...
I bought my son a 2000 ZX2 with A/C and CD tape. Works great! I would do it all again except I'd go for the optional leather interior.
This is not to say this car hasn't had problems, it has. But considering that it has over 100K miles on it and we've only replaced the five speed transmission with a junk yard special, a few wheels from too much curb proximity problems. And the Goodyear's it came with are expensive to replace, so we did with a larger sized Pirelli for less than half price. It's doing just great! It still has the original battery guys!
I read in your review that you had a Neon before you got the Escort ZX2. I did, too. I know quite a few people who've went from Neons to Escorts. Personally, I've had no problems with my 2000 Escort ZX2 yet, except for some vibration in the front end, caused by broken motor mounts.
I own a 2000 zx2 and it has 104k miles on it, and it still runs great. I bought it new, had to replace the fuel pump, and an alternator, plus the basic maintence but other than that no problems. excpet my thermostat went out and that wasnt fun at all. had to get new tires a couple of times from doing 180's and such I run my car very hard and it still works very well.
I have 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 S/R and it was my first car. I have had no problems with it, but the only thing is the governor which keeps my car at 110 mph and not at 150. I have only lost twice with my car.
I have a 1999 Ford Escort zx2 I bought it for 3500 in October of 2004. It had 62,482 miles. Since I have had it I've had to jumpstart it about 20 times and have it towed. Imagine having somewhere really important to go and you jump inside your car which is suppose to crank up when you stick your key in, but it does nothing. This car has left me stranded on numerous occassions. this car really sucks and I don't recommend anyone to buy it. Yeah it looks nice, but looks can be deceiving.
My family has owned two escorts and has never had any problems with them. If you are spending over $100 in tires it is your own fault I get mine for around $35 a piece for 15 inch wheels balanced and mounted, it does help to shop around. Anyone who has problems with these cars eithier bought one that has been abused in the past or are not taking care of it themselves. I could go out in a brand new Porsche and treat it badly and have it break down on me all of the time. As long as you don't drive it like a race car and have the regular maintenence performed you won't have any problems.
I have a 98 ford escort ZX2 this car has 135,785 miles on it other than a few minor fixes with new brakes and some new tires the car has ran great. No problems with anything.
I own a 2000 Ford Escort zx2 S/R and the only problem I've had with it is the transmission going out at about 30,000 miles and the dealership stuck with the warranty and replaced it for free... It now has just under 60,000 miles and I have not had a problem with it. I like the car so much I put a body kit and a stage 2 racing clutch and also a K&N cold air intake on it and much more to come.
