Thus far, I haven't had any major problems with my Ranger. I did purchase the vehicle wrecked, so any complications I had stemmed from that.
The ABS light was on, I simply reconnected sliced wires and the problem was solved.
I am 21, and have owned 8 different Rangers since I was able to drive at 16. Everything from a 1985 4x4, with no radio, no power steering, or even a vinyl floor mat, from the factory; to a 1996 Ranger STX extended cab that was practically a Cadillac in terms of comfort and interior features. The 2000 Ranger I have now is by far the best performing, being a standard cab with a step-side (fiberglass) bed. I enjoy blasting through the gears every day on my way to work, and still get an honest 20 miles to the gallon. I don't know how some of you can claim 12-15 mpg.,but I suggest you change your driving style or have the tuning of the engine checked!
The only flaws I see in this truck are the seats. The 60-40 split bench seat makes for a sore bottom on extended trips.
I have to disagree with the gas mileage claimed above. I don't have a heavy foot and it doesn't need a tune up its had poor gas mileage since I got it. I'm very disappointed in My Ranger and will NEVER own another one again.
My 2000 Ranger 4x4 has developed a small oil leak. I thought it might be a lose oil filter, as I just had an oil change. So I took it back to the shop and ask them to have a look. They said it appeared to be coming from the rear oil seal, but put dye into the oil and ask me to bring it back the next day so they could check it with the ultraviolet light. I did and they said it was the oil pan gasket. How much to repair, I asked. $550 for an oil pan gasket replacement, and I nearly dropped my teeth. Was told they had to drop the transmission to get the pan below the breather tube or some such thing in order to insert a new gasket. Isn't there a simpler less expensive way?
Hello, I had the same problem with the oil pan gasket and I have heard this is a common problem. Should this be a recall? The price I was quoted was $ 700. I only have 41K on this truck, This should not happen. Where can I get it done for $550?? Contact me at thewills5@att.net and let me know if you got it fixed. Anybody else who had the same problem - let me know how you made out.
My friend, junk the truck again well the motor I should say. the 4.0 engines and drive train have a flaw in the design there is no way of fixing the problem... your engine heads will get hair line cracks in them, head gaskets will go and transmission problems will definitely come... my theory is the reason why the truck was wrecked is that the previous owner couldn't deal with the headaches.
I have no idea of what kind of truck yall have, but my ranger is very good on gas mileage. It has 75000 miles on it. Runs great without any problems.
Well, if some of you live at higher elevations then your mpg will suffer. Also if you live in a mountainess or hilly area too. The reveiwer could live on the plains or something where its flat as a board and get great mpg.
Also most of those EPA mpg ratings you see in ads pertain to the 5 speed standard 2wd models. And sometimes they sneek in that it only applies to 4cyl motors too. Its all a big setup to get you to buy it thinking it has good gas mileage, all the companies do it.
My brother's 2000 Ranger 4wd gets 18-20 mpg in the foothills and mountains.
My Ranger 4X4 gets desent gas milege I would have better, but I have mud tires and a lift kit. But It's never left me in the mud. It's the best truck in my book.
I had a 98 ranger xlt and I got over 24mpg, not running AC of course. As far as trucks go, this is one of the best, if not the best, as far as performance to economics ratio goes. It had 156ooo when I sold it to get another one. I had for over 90000 miles and only put in a battery and alternator as well as the normal maintenance.
How is the transmission in the 2000 Ranger 4x4 auto?
I'm 18 and have a 2000 Ranger with a quarter million miles on it and it still runs great. It has had it's share of problems, but the gas mileage is great, 20+ in the summer. It definitely beats the Chevy Malibu I was going to buy.
I have a 2000 2.5 ranger. I bought it used and it had some problems, It gave me 15mpg. I changes both O2 and MAF sensors, put a K & N intake, change the catalytic converter, new battery and alternator, put in NGK spark plugs and wires, regular oil change along with oil filter and gas filter. Now I get 22 mpg, not bad for an old truck. I would think that on the high way I would get better mpg.
