Transmission busted after 3 weeks of purchase.
1 year after changing transmission (1600$) with oil cooler, it busted again.
Hard shifting, feels like you are driving a dune buggy.
Gas tank leaks when full.
Cracking sound in direction,
First of all, it is the worst car I've ever owned. I will never buy a ford product again.
The 4 speed transmission on the Taurus/sable is a piece of crap.
It has very poor gas mileage.
Please...never buy a Taurus unless you are a mechanic with a lot of time to spare.
How can you expect your Taurus to run perfectly if it has over 200,000 km on it when you purchased it? Any car with that many km on it is bound to have a boat load of problems.
I bet if you had purchased a responsibly driven Taurus with 100,000 km on it and didn't drive it like a sports car then you wouldn't have had more than half the problems you had.
I have a Taurus that has over 125,000 miles on it, basically it is a good car, with a few minor repairs that need to be done to it, which is to be expected with an older vehicle. Don't we wish they would all run like brand new?
Almost everyone knows that no matter how well a Taurus/Sable is taken care of and no matter how carefully it is driven the transmission is faulty. That is the biggest complaint about them. Ford needs to recall them and make them stronger. I had to take a brand new Taurus as a rental car and the Transmission went out on me 200 miles out of town. It only had 4500 miles on it. I would never buy a front wheel drive Ford product. I owned a 71 Ford Galaxie with no problems what so ever and my brother drives a '95 F-150 with no problems.
No, not everybody knows about the ford transmissions. If I would have known, I would not have bought the Ford Taurus I now own and call The Money Pit.
The guy who mentioned front drive ford products is right on the money. Those front drive Ford's, although smooth riding just have some prohibitively bad problems. My buddies well maintained 95 blew the tranny at 64000 yesterday on the way back from vegas after performing excellently the whole trip. barely any signs... there was two hard shifts out of park, and the thing stopped on the freeway outside pasadena. I believe any American car is for those who like to tinker, but those rear drive cars will last with minor repairs and maintenence, front drive fords blow trannys and head gaskets, and have brake issues when the get old. My 84 front drive honda hasn't had anything, but a clutch and some timing belts in 211000 miles.
Well, I have a 1991 Ford Taurus right now. There is nothing wrong with it. I have had it for over a year now. As long as you keep the engine up, oil changes, annual inspections, etc., your Taurus (along with any car) should run just fine. Maybe this guy bought it from someone who didn't take care of it. Take it for a test drive, check the engine before you buy a car! My car has almost 250,000 miles on it. I drive that thing ROUGH. It's still staying strong. You have to take care of your car for it to take care of you. JC
My 91 ford Taurus LX -was- given to me (possibly unfortunately). It has only 68,000 miles on it, and amongst the problems listed below, are various other problem areas, such as cosmetic and performance problems.
So far, the water heater has broken down on multiple occasions.
Head gaskets had to be replaced.
Starter had severe problems, and problems with stalling.
Inner and outer tie rods had to be replaced.
Brake rotors all around had to be replaced.
I just got the transmission rebuilt (I know, stupid, cost more than the car is worth. :: sigh ::) And then the wheel bearings in the front went out.
Now, I have news that there is severe, possibly fatal (for the car) corrosion damage to the unibody.
In short, I have not had this car go for longer than a month without breaking down, and I've only had it for 2 and a half years. I can see why the car dealer laughed when my mother tried to trade it in towards her newer car. I would not consider buying another Ford product again.
I got my 1991 Ford Taurus GL 6 month ago. The transmission was never changed. Car runs just perfect! No problems at all.
And there is nothing wrong with it being front wheel drive because I'm not a big fan of drifting and street racing...
Therefore when people buy Ford Taurus they should not expect an F1 performance...
