2001 Ford F150 SuperCrew XLT from North America - Comments

"Absolute waste of money"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Alignment Problems.

3 separate ignition coils (there's one for each cylinder!) at $275 each installed by the dealer.

Rapid brake wearout.

No power, unable to pull small boat trailer at highway speeds.

Miserable gas mileage.

General comments?

This is the most disappointing vehicle I've ever driven.

My 94 Suburban had twice the power, rode much smoother, and averaged almost 8 miles more on a gallon of gas.

All suggested services were done on time and truck is well maintained, but has never done better than 13mpg. That was on the Interstate with the cruise set at 60. Normal driving is less that 11 mpg. Dealer tells me I'm doing better than most owners. Although it has the "Towing Package" and 17 inch wheels, pulling a 14 foot aluminum fishing boat this thing downshifts on even moderate inclines and fuel consumption drops to single digits. And yes, that's with the overdrive disabled.

To add insult to injury, the 2004 retails for $5,000 less than I paid for this thing 4 years ago so I can't find anyone to buy this lemon!

I'm going back to GM.

Dude, sorry you have had such a bad time of it with this truck. I own a 2002 Supercrew (4.6L) which gets 20 mpg on the highway, and while no powerhouse, will tow a 3-horse trailer at highway speeds (around 65 with the overdrive off) with no problem. I get 12 MPG while towing, but that is to be expected. The truck is comfortable and roomy (except for the bed) and a real joy to drive. XLT, power sunroof, all power, I am not sure about your local dealer, but I can't touch a comparably equipped 2004 F-150 Supercrew for anything like what the 2002 cost.

Was there a warning come from the Ford Canada on the Front suspension regarding Tire rod ends?

Dude I have a 2003 supercrew fx4 with the 5.4 liter. I get 18 mpg and that's even with my wife driving it a few times a week. I like the way it rides and love the interior room because I am 6'7" tall. It has more head and leg room then the Hummer H 2 which that is what my wife drives and if you think you are getting bad mileage in the f-150 try 6-7 mpg in the Hummer H 2. My only dislikes is the small bed and that darn torsion bar front end. I don't like the new 2004 f-150 it looks ugly, but I love the fact they went to the coil set up. As far as service, normal oil changes and tire rotation and alignment, 40,000 care free miles.

I own a 2001 Super crew Lariat 2wd. It is the most comfortable and roomy of any other truck or SUV I have been in. I am not thrilled about the gas mileage which is usually 15-17 on the highway, but it's not that bad. The only thing that I do not like is that I have to replace the front brakes every year. The truck also seems to "go" when you put it in gear without putting on the gas. I have been satisfied overall. It is about to be paid for and I am thinking about getting an SUV, but can't find anything near as comfortable or roomy.

I have an '01 XLT 4X4... beats the pants off the Dodge that I had before. I agree the mileage could be better (I have the 5.4L engine). But spent 180 dollars for a bed cover and my mileage shot up to almost 20 on the highway. Have had to have 2 coils replaced and at 108 thousand miles I've only been through one set of brakes and 2 sets of tires. Must be the way I drive. I only complaint is the size of the gas tank... thinking of installing a second tank to extend my range. But overall.. this is the best vehicle I've ever had. Plan on keeping it for another 200,000 miles or more.

I purchased a 2001 Ford Super Crew Lariat, 4WD because I liked the room and design.

But at 12 MPG highway it is starting to hurt. Not to include the repairs!

Where do I start? At only 79K miles, warped exhaust manifold which broke manifold stud bolts, major Ouch. Power steering pump bearing (wiped out 2 serpentine belts) kick me when I'm down. Drive shaft U-Joints, minor pain.

Front brake wear, constant pain. No cruise, they disconected at last service interval (no replacement parts). Leak under windshield onto interior power distribution box, (causing heater to run when ever it rains without Key, killing battery), call the banker for a loan.

One major problem with the f150 supecrew 2001 year... major exhaust leak on the right side manifold. ford should help fix this problem because it may cause the valves to warp.

My husband purchased his 01 F150 Super Crew 5 years ago, We have a lawn care business; we pull a full trailer everyday. Yeah the gas mileage might not be the best, but it's not the worst. My husband has a lead foot and is not easy on his truck; we did have to rebuild his rear end around 150,000 miles for $400, but it was worth it.

We didn't change the oil like we should of, but we did have to change a few ignition coils; $25.00 to $ 30.00 a piece. He did it himself.

Brakes; well yeah we go through a lot, but (lifetime guarantee) take them back get another pair (free).

We finally blew our motor 6 months ago at 275,000 hard miles. We put another motor and decided to change the transmission; $1700 for both motor and tranny at a junk yard (2003 with 60,000). It's like new again.

In my opinion Ford built a great reliable truck; we just pushed it.

You say "lack of power" and "brakes wear rapidly". I am thinking are the calipers grabbing???
