"The performance could be improved some more"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The engine vibrates too much and it makes a rattling sound similar to a diesel engine.

General comments?

I owned a 2004 Jeep Liberty Limited, 2 x 4, 3.7L. I am very satisfied with this vehicle, but not with the service here in Puerto Rico.

The day after we purchased our Jeep, we noticed a clanking noise very similar to the sound of a diesel engine. The vehicle was taken in for service; the dealer replaced some bad timing chain tensors, the crankshaft bearings were replaced too, and so was the chain case cover gasket and an "o" ring.

The noise was gone for one day, but by the second day the noise returned and now the engine block shakes, black stuff drips from the muffler, white smoke puffs burst when you first start the engine, the engine itself sounds much louder than before, and it expels a very strong carbon monoxide odor like an old car!

I have taken the vehicle for all its maintenance services. My husband took the Jeep to a different dealer and they said that the noise I keep hearing is normal on the 2004 model. If it is normal, why does it come and go as it pleases?

The dealer scheduled an appointment with a Daimler-Chrysler representative. At the scheduled appointment, this person admitted to hear an irregular sound and scheduled our vehicle for service for the following week. The day of the appointment he claimed that we were imagining this noise and nothing is being done. I want to take the vehicle to a mechanic not affiliated to a dealer for a check up. Will this affect in any way the warranty? What could possibly be the problem with my Jeep?

As for the white smoke, if you cut the Jeep on and off a lot of times with out really driving it, this will cause the engine to flood temporarily and cause white smoke to come out, also it will probably run rough for a few seconds until it gets its act together. As for the black stuff, I have noticed that comming out of my 2003 model lately. At first I thought it was oil, but I put my finger in it and smelled it and it does not have an odor. My guess it just some dirt got up there and it's comming out with the water. It wasn't pouring out, it would drip a little bit say while the car was warming up or I let it run for a minute or two while in the house getting something.

Well my 2003 liberty has been in the shop for 3 week now. I had my oil light come on and stayed on and had it towed to the dealer. They told me I needed a new motor. I was shocked being though the oil light never came on before nor the engine light. I thought these were supposed to be warning indicaters not a wait until you are screwed device. Now they don't want to honor my warranty because although I had maintenance done it wasn't always on theh the exact scheduled time. My dealership told me to go get a second opinion if I wanted. Now I'm in a battle between my dealership and Chrysler. Not to mention that this is my 4th truck from this dealership in Md. and my 7th Chrysler product in the last 5 yrs. What ever happened to good faith.

2003 Jeep Liberty Limited - I've had my 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited for almost 2 years. It only has 14000 miles on it. I don't drive it very much, however, there now appears to be a problem with the steering mechanism. The Jeeps steering lacks proper response on turns. I noticed this once before, mentioned it to the Dealer and they had to tighten something, but never really said what. Now it seems that the problem is worse. I'll keep you posted as I will be taking to the shop this week again. KL.

I bought my 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport in August. About 2 weeks later I felt a bump shift when I slowed to a stop. I brought it back to the dealer and they told me it was the lower accumulator piston which they replaced. The next day on my way to work it happened again, I called the service department and I am to bring it back in. Has anyone else had this problem with their Jeep? Other than that I do love the car, but am wondering if I got a lemon!

I own a 2003 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7 engine. It has 35,500 miles and has suddenly developed a knocking noise in the engine. Took it in and the engine was coated with engine oil sludge, even under the valve covers. I change the oil myself and keep records. I change oil every 3,000 to 4.500 miles. But anyway the Dodge dealership told me I would probably need a new engine. They told me these engines run "hotter" than normal engines. I was told my a Chrysler motor expert who teaches automotive at our local technical college told me these 3.7 engines run about 200 degrees hotter than a normal engine which causes the motor oil to break down and loose its properties much quicker than what is normal for oil. He also said that Chrysler has had problems with these engines creating oil sludge - the result of oil breakdown. So if your 3.7 creates sludge, your engine may break down sooner or later. I can't help, but wonder if new oil starts breaking down sooner than expected in these motors and creates sludge before an owner knows it. Well my Doge dealer had their district manager discussing the matter with Chrysler. What is interesting is that the oil light has never came on. I read that one of the other individuals had a similar experience with their Jeep and the oil light. My dealer told me the oil has to be changed "religiously" and you better have it done at a dealership so there are no descrepancies with Chrysler, because they don't care about your personal records apparently.
