"A disappointing high-end SUV"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Replaced the alternator shortly after I got it.

O2 sensor had to be replaced.

General comments?

When I bought the Montero I was thrilled. This thing has more bells and whistles than one could ever use. However after a while I began to see it's short comings. From what I've learned they all burn oil. Mine was no exception. The fuel economy is horrible, repairs are very costly, the electric windows would stop working, the power locks were very touchy. I was disappointed it the quality in it was constructed. For example they used the smallest guage wire posible. It is the worst handling SUV I've ever driven. The cabin is extremely narrow for a full sized SUV.

It's not that it's a bad SUV, it's all the little things that happen. To it's credit it ran good and had a lot of power.

I agree with your review. I bought my 95 montero LS in 04 with 92,000 miles on it. Not bad mileage for a 10 year old car. It was good at first, but then after about 6 months, I started having multiple problems. ie, this thing likes to go through alternators. (I'm getting ready to replace my third one since I got the car in Sep 04) It's also difficult finding certain parts for it. I've been looking for a driver's side window regulator for the longest time. Okay, enough with the bad stuff. When the montero runs like it's supposed to, it does run well. The four wheel drive on it is amazing. Hands down, one of the best I've ever driven. I could throw it in low gear and still do 40 on an unplowed street with 18 inches of snow with no problems whatsoever.
