Carby........ blocked jets and poor quality (on the makers behalf.. Hitachi??)
Engine was underpowered and slow.
Water leaks around heater inlets.
I've worked a lot now on the engine E.G: Port and Polish, Weber Carbys x 2, performance cam, and now as I type a new exhaust is being fitted (2 1/2"). Looking at installing a turbo, but need more info on the motor limits (psi).
Looking better everyday, reliable now.................. and super quick.
The standard motors are crap and inefficient so why not install an SR20 from a 200SX? They would go very hard (relatively cheap) and use hardly any fuel.
The compression ratio needed with a turbo depends on the amount of boost. I reckon this engine will be good for low a low boost turbo if the compression is dropped to about 8:1. Any wilder and the bottom end may protest.
The engine in your car is an L20, these can be found in standard turbo charged form from a Japanese importer much cheaper than turbocharging your old engine and much more reliable, stronger, and efficient.
Also availible is the Z18 engine found in Bluebird ZX turbo cars (delivered to Australia). I own a series 3 Bluebird with a CA20 motor, I have fitted a hot cam and a weber. It goes reasonably well, but I am converting it to a RB20 6 cylinder turbo at around $1500 with computer and sensors from good importers.
For any information you can give me on my bluebird mail me at: super_sharp_shooter@hotmail.com
L20b never came with a turbo, Nissan made a L20ET 6 cyl, but not a 4 cyl. As for the sr20, you are looking at about $5k minimum for a job that will get a engineer's certificate. And as for the l20 being crap, obviously you have never seen one worked properly, I wouldn't complain with 200 HP.
Damn right! A cheap way of getting some more grunt out of the L20B is whacking on a pair of 1 3/4 SU's found on the 260Z. I have a Z20ET in my SII Bluebird (Z20 block with Z18ET turbo manifolds), 8 plugs firing simultaneously and have about 174Kw at the wheels! The bottom end is basically the L20B!!! Get your L20B fully balanced, flywheel lightened, head ported and a pair of 45-48mm Webbers, and you won't be disappointed!

I've just added the fuel injection from the Nissan Pintara to my series/3 Bluebird with 4 into 1 extractors and puny 2" system and the thing is heaps better than that dreadfull
carbi could ever hope to be, but then agian its no CA18turbo
that's my next project, CA20 engine problems to be wary of are mainly the rocker shaft bolts can pull out of the head if you continually reving it past 5500 but considering the power curve is all over by then it shouldn't be too much of a problem, oh yeh before I go all parts set me back $150 from the local wrecker so its not too bad of an upgrade for a daily driver. zooming2u@yahoo.com.
The bluebirds had a rest from any work and taking money from my wallet! The other day put a mint (and I mean mint) condition bumper and TRX spoiler on the wagon and it now looks a treat! The wagon is an amazing gold color, but the spoiler is red... so I'll be painting it soon!!
The other day at the "ozdat" show and shine saw a sIII with a SR20 in it...nice, but the car was a bit wreck, but now can image what work needs to take place...
Driving a bluey is an art form!!!

I have a nissan bluebird trx s2. I found it was a slug ie restrictive exhaust and carbie problems. But ripped it out and bored it and put over sized pistons in it. Along with twin 45mm side draught webbers. Also a performance street cam. Ported and polished the head. Whacked a 240 k gearbox behind it and now she is a little pocket rocket and not too bad on the juice. A 2 1/2 inch up to the diff and 3 inch mandrel bent with a high flow exhaustmade the difference. Sweet. Gonna stick it on the dyno and see what it does.
I have a CA20 in my series 3 blubird..
Stock with all the way 2.5 inch exhaust at the moment I keep up with some stock VL commadores
but does anyone know any bolt-on upgrades for a CA20
i am having a little trouble with getting my tail smashed buy the odd VN.
All RWD CA series engines can be swapped with any other CA series engine (ie a CA18det, some of which have been worked to in excess of 300 rear wheel kw!) a z18 is also an easy swap, as for SR20 power, all mounts line up, but one engine mount, which needs to be slotted. Have fun.
I have a Nissan bluebird '85 station wagon. I need a bit of help with All these pipes on CA 20 engine. I had a broken valve that made a hole in a piston few weeks ago. I have found all the parts, changed rings and the rest that goes with it. I have lost$300 in Parts and about five days of my time fixing it.
Now I have a problem how to put all of the pipes in the appropriate places, because some of the tapes I used as labels get very dirty.
If anyone knows a link where I could find some pics or scheme for these pipes.
Please email me darco@iprimus.com.au
Thanks.
I own a 1984 s2 TRX and was wondering if I will get a considerable power gain if I fit a Z18 head onto the L20 block, keeping in mind cost effectiveness. I will be able to do most of the work bar the fuel injection system by myself. Also, what sized exhaust will I need to put on it? I have been quoted at $2000 for the Z18 head and manifolds minus the fuel injection systems and the turbo.
If anyone can help me feel free to email me at benny_c013@hotmail.com.
Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a 1985 manual Bluebird. I'm only 15, so my bank account will virtually be empty once I buy it. I'm going to save hard so I can buy a CA18DET for it, but I want to know if it is a straight bolt-in conversion. Is it?
If not, can someone please tell me what is needed to be done to bolt one in?
Also, if/when I get the CA18DET, will the stock Bluebird 5 speed be able to handle the power, or should I get a Silvia 5 speed manual too?
Please e-mail me with any help at psshhhht@hotmail.com.
Thank you,
Jeremy.
I have a s2 bluebird and want to turbo charge the l20b as cheaply as possible I would be happy with 8\9 psi what mods would I need to do to achieve this ALSO WHAT LSD DIFF WOULD BOLT UP EASIEST AND IS THERE A KIT FOR TURBO CHARGING
A L20B available PLEASE HELP ME SYDENHAM@ARCOM.COM.AU ANY INFO WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED ASAP SHANE S.A.
