CO level too high, I had lots of trouble finding out why, changing this and that, changing lots of parts, eventually I had to change the entire carburettor. Surprising for a sturdy engine like the B19.
Brakes squeak like old Volvo's do.
The engine keeps overheating. Changed the thermostat, cleaned the radiator... Could be head gasket, but not losing any water. Annoying!
And of course it's rusting...
I was very satisfied when I came across this old car - low mileage, looked good for it's age and it was comfortable and spacey like Volvo's are. However, the carburettor thing was awfully bugging. That little thing cost me a lot of worries and a lot of parts that I didn't need after all... And now, as I am selling it, the engine keeps overheating when A) it's hot, and B) I'm driving uphill. Not good at all.
I've only had this for a year, but I'm surprised by the faults I've experienced. Though this is essentially a sturdy and reliable car - I guess it's just bad luck...
But generally; good comfort for a twenty-four year old car, though I miss my Amazon estate at times...
I have had my '79 Volvo for the past two years. I bought the car to learn basic mechanic skills. Over the years I have had minor problems, such as the slave cylinder failing me in the city. However the carb has given me a little trouble over the years. In Australia our cars are not checked for emissions, but I have found that the carb loves a good clean every four weeks with carb cleaner (Spray the carb cleaner whilist the car is cold for best results) along with a top of transmission fluid. I often add carb/petrol solution into the petrol tank which helps starting the car and power output.
The carb fuel air mixture screw is very sensitive. I had inital problems with the screw constantly moving. I finally figured out the screw was moving as a result of the engine moving. I adjusted the screw and put thread lock on it.
Check the timing belt. Even till this day I can't figure out why the timing on my car needs to be advanced so much for it to start first time. Still working on that problem.
Do you have any problems with the solenoid value? My car sometimes diesels when I switch it off. If could be a number of things, but I can't be bothered any more. As long as the car goes and gets me where I want that's the main thing.
Overall I love the car and Its still a solid car. I had a little rust at the front of the car. I treated it with Rust proof and primmer its all good now. Try using fish oil to prevent further rust.
Good luck
