Automatic gearbox failed at 58000 miles.
Replacement automatic gearbox failed at 70000.
Luxury, high performance mile muncher.
This is the third Granada Cosworth that I have owned and I spent ages looking for one with low mileage (58000) with a full MDSH. This is also the first that I have ever had any problems with the automatic gearbox although it is apparently a well known weak point as the oil cooler can cause the fluid to overheat, leading to failure of the box.
That aside it is still one of the best bargains around. Who wants to spend 5 times as much for a german counterpart that wont be as fully loaded.
I've fitted a manual gearbox in it now, so let the fun continue.
I have been looking for a while to purchase a 24v cosworth Granada, though dislike the idea of a automatic gear box, on one of the other reviews someone had meantioned fitting a manual gear box! is this easily possible?? S6kingkiki@aol.com.
It is possible to fit a manual, but not easy. I don't think there was a 2.9 manual Granada mk3.
The 2.9 24v is a derivative of the 2.9 Cologne 12v, which is in turn a development of the 2.8 Cologne as fitted to mk2 Granadas and Capris, so in theory the type 9 5 speed from one of these should fit a 24v, after you've installed a manual spigot bush and flywheel and pedal box.
Personally I think the type 9 had its work cut out with the Capri's 160bhp, so putting the 24v's 200bhp through it doesn't sound like a recipe for long life.
If you can find one, the bellhousing from a 2.9 Transit would let you fit a later and stronger mt75 gearbox.
