In the eight years I've owned it and after driving 200 000 km in Eastern Canada.. this is what I have replaced.
Torque converter
Crankshaft position sensor
Starter
motor mounts
U-joints
Radiator/water pump
Fuel sending unit
Brakes, Brakes and more Brakes
Oxygen sensor
Catalytic converter
and of course...fluids, tires, belts, hoses, battery and bulbs.
The truck has been fairly good...has never let me down once while driving except for that nasty crankshaft position sensor which caused the truck to die suddenly at any time until I figured out what the problem was. (It took me 4 months untill proper diagnosis, the best thing to do is to ask a dealer to install a driving buddy which will record the code when it's an intermittent problem such as this)
My major negatives are;
Truck constantly wanders on highway (due mostly from drag of turning live front axle) This problem is only on 93-94 with no CV joints
It's a little rough running (ie: diesels)
Everything leaks (rear main seal, drivshaft seals, oil filter seat)
Crappy air conditioner which shorted out often (switch)
The positives are:
Fantastic transfer case -best 4x4 engagement, engage at any speed, select trac is way too go-no problems in 10 years or 240k kms. -Change your transfer case oil and differential fluids every 50 k kms.
Solid engine which is so far indestructable.
OK gas mileage considering...
Good heat in winter.
You can't beat those old AMC 6 cylinder engines, too bad they couldn't adapt them for diesel combustion. I'm kinda curious about your torque converter, 200000km and you had to replace it? Did you do much towing or mountain driving with it?
