2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS from North America - Comments

"Nice looking, but this one is defective"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The original transmission had to be replaced once in 2003 and again in 2004.

There was a recall on window mechanism because the window once fell down into

the door without notice. Plastic retainer inside melted.

Car occasionally gets stuck in park due to faulty brake light sensor.

General comments?

I like the car and think that I am just unfortunate to have gotten one with a transmission issue. I don't think it happens often to other Jetta owners.

Bought my car in Feb 2002. It's a 2002 Jetta GLS. I have had many problems with my car, at 10k I had to have a new transmission put in it because the car was not shifting correctly. at 25k I started having the same problem, but the dealership said there was nothing wrong with it. Fought with them until it was fixed at 35k. The latch on the armrest just broke off, and yesterday when I went to drive my car I was not able to get the car out of park. I finally got it into Neutral with a little help and then it was stuck there. Today I was finally able to get the car into drive, but then got stuck in park again. I called the dealership and they said there is a recall, but the recall is not for my car.?? Has anyone else had this problem? Did they finally fix it? I have 73k on my car now, so the warranty is up. I really don't have to pay out of pocket for this mess! I just recently checked out the recalls on my car... funny I haven't received any notices in the mail for them.

Yup. My 2001 got a new transmission too. Slipping gears.

Lame.

Yep, my transmission slips too, especially if I've been driving on the interstate at like 65 for a little while, then I goto exit and it's bucking me all around because it doesn't want to go into gear...

Mine also smells like crayons, the latch on the console broke off, sweat from a drink made all the radio buttons stick except the last 2, CD player does the ERRR thing a lot, front bumper keeps popping out of place if I so much as touch a concrete thing while parking, the plastic coating stuff on the handles and around the window buttons is coming off along with the black coating on the steering wheel... ugh.

My 2001 Jetta TDI has just recently been getting stuck into park... The break light won't go off. It decides to work every now and again, but is very frustrating.

I, too, have a 2001 Jetta and have nothing, but problems. I have had the transmission replaced (while in warranty, thank goodness). It gets stuck in park regularly and than finally decides to move out of park when it feels like it. I have this loud humming sound coming from one of my tires. When I have it checked I am told that they can't find anything. What can we do???

I also have a 01 Jetta - the issue with not being able to put the car in gear is most likely due to the EPC module. It's a little plunger type device behind your brake pedal that tells the transmission that you have your foot on the brake, which is required to for the transmission. When it malfunctions the transmission won't go in gear. There is a recall for this but I paid $5 at the dealer for a new one and spent 15-20 min replacing it myself. EPC module failure can also effect your brake lights, so be careful.
