Murphy's law definitely appiled to this truck. Just about everything went wrong with it.
Starting off with the radiator which gave out 2 days after I bought this truck.
A month later the electrical system burned up for reasons I still can't figure out to this day.
I thought my problems were over, but that was just the start of a 3-year long nightmare.
Six months after the electrical system went crazy the starter gave out.
Then came the radiator hoses which gave out after 5,000 miles.
The truck had always burned oil and smoked so I kind of got used to it. Plus it was an automatic when I bought it and when the motor was cold it would not shift out from 1st. Not to mention the engine took a good 10 min to warm up on a hot day.
At the beginning of 2002 the 3rd gear in the transmission just shredded and died on the way back to my house so I had to ride in 2nd for about a good 40 miles which was embarrassing considering I couldn't safely go over 35.
So me and my step-dad (who thankfully is a mechanic) put in a stick shift and I never had another problem with the transmission.
But low and behold a year later the engine finally gave out at 195000 miles. Not too bad considering it ran like crap since the day I bought it.
Got it back in October after I finished up my basic training and schooling and then got sent up to Alaska so I sold it without thinking twice for $700. Even though I had spent $1000 in engine work. I just wanted to rid myself of that horrible pile of dodo.
Its not that bad of a hauler its just unreliable.
I usually had to carry a full tool set when I traveled in case that thing broke down.
Only thing I liked about it is it had good seats, but the rest of the inside of the truck was crappy. Squeaks and rattles everywhere.
Plus it had a rather poor suspension. I felt everything the road had to offer.
In conclusion, its good for a work truck, but that's about it.
Sounds like your truck was thrashed by a previous owner, that is an incredible laundry list of problems! Mazda pickups are usually very reliable, either yours was thrashed, or assembled on the Friday before a long weekend.
I agree with the above comment. these trucks are quite reliable and rarely have such major issues. the truck was most definitely thrashed by a previous owner - have seen this on several occasions with B2200's. sorry you did'nt get to enjoy this truck as they are quite fun and reliable to own.
