At 109,000 miles my catalytic converter had to be replaced. Very expensive.
A month later power steering pump broke another expensive replacement.
CV joints might be bad, make a constant clicking noise.
Leaks oil all over.
If the car was equipped with 5 spd tranny the car would get up and go.
But with the 4 spd auto tran the car lags from stop.
Car is sleek and great looking, with the time and money you could have a fast, great looking car.
Handles well in corners, with shorter springs car would stick like glue.
I own a 1993 90s 5 speed, and it also leaks oil constantly. I am told the source of the leak may be underneath the intake manifold of the engine, so I just keep the oil level where it should be.
I had to replace both catalytic converters at 113k, but universal fit cats work for these cars, and can generally save a lot of money.
These cars require the best maintenance and fluids, especially power steering fluid. The 93-95 90s all require G 00 2000 hydraulic power steering fluid. Other cheap fluids could cause failure of the steering pump.
Watch out for the CV boots on these cars, especially the front outer ones. If they go, that will often lead to CV joint failure.
I bought this car 3 months ago, and it is the smoothest car I've ever owned. It corners well, it's very fast, and it gets pretty good mpg (I get about 21-22 avg.)
I've had my 1993 90 CS for 3 years and I love it. When I bought it I realized what I was getting into buying an Audi so I was prepared for some expensive repairs. at around 87,000 miles the idle stabilizer went and the coolant tank needed to be replaced, costing about $750 from the Audi dealer. I also had the exhaust patched at around 92k and had a CV boot replaced at 97k, for $280, also at the dealer (apparently no-one, but the 90 dollar an hour dealer can fix these things). It also leaks oil and steering fluid like crazy, but its not really a problem if you check the fluids often.
As far as the ride quality I am very pleased, while not real fast with 175 horses and 3300 pounds, it is fast enough to be fun to drive if you have the five speed. The manual transmission is a joy to shift through, with good spacing between gears and smooth, easy, up and down shifting. It corners well enough, but I would like the suspension to be a little firmer, even though the body is very rigid, so that it could compete with a BMW three series.
The interior is very nice, leather seats, steering wheel and wood accents give the car an expensive feel, and an uncluttered dash and instrument panel with clean lines help keep the cockpit simple. It is comfortable for long rides (I am 6'5" and frequently make the five hour trip to college), but forget about putting a full size adult in the rear eat for more than an hour.
For the $4800 I spent on the car with 84k miles on it I am very pleased. I got a stylish, fun to drive, safe and good looking car, and though it is expensive to repair, I am still the envy of all my friends.
