Two days ago it happened that at precisely 100,000.00 km (62,000.00 miles) ceramic part of sparking-plug spontaneously broke and entered in Cylinder causing it to stop functioning. According to the mechanist, to repair this problem it would cost around US$ 9,000.00.
The mechanist also mentioned that instead of repairing it would be cheaper to replace engine with the used one.
Please inform me how come it is possible that such problem has happened to MAZDA MILLER CYCLE ENGINE (Xedos 9) that has passed only 62,000.00 miles was maintained regularly and became Wards BEST ENGINE for 1997. Does anyone suggest anything?
I Have a Mazda Xedos 9 with a Miller Cycle engine and at 160,000KM it started to miss fire and idle like a tractor. I replaced the spark plugs which took 8 hours - no change.I checked all 6 coil units which were also fine The problem showed up when I carried out a compression test. The rear center cylinder had only 5 bar when the others had 15bars. So now the cost for a garage to look at this problem is around 3,000 euros and the fix on top of this means the car is finished and only 6 years old with full Mazda history and service. I am attempting to do the job myself, but I cannot get any info, i.e. valve timing, cylinder head timing etc, Hi tech engines are great when they work, but once they fail the costs are huge.
I own a 1197 s model, and am experiencing a random missfire. I also changed the plugs and one coil. The problem, however, comes and goes. Apparently, it has to be missfiring to be diagnosed properly. The engine has 105k miles and runs smooth at times, but then erratically and stumbling. I have tried to research this issue, over the net,to no avail. The previous entry about compreesion loss really scares me though..
Spark plugs going in pieces is not really the engines fault. Yes it's unfortunate, but these things may happen due to poor quality plugs or some manufacturing process fault. Ultra-rare occasions though.
I wonder whether anybody has experienced high oil consumption with Miller engine fitted to Mazda Xedos 9?
I have a 1997 Mazda Xedos 9. Four years ago, at the mileage of 75.000 km, the transmission box (gear) broke. I had to repair it for a huge amount of money. Now it has happened again, after another 70.000 km. Is there anyone who have experienced a similar accident? Is there an explanation why this can happen, and even twice?
I own a Mazda Xzedos 9 2.5 miller and am also experiencing the compression problems where the car will run fine on the rare occasion, but when stationary the cars starts to shudder violently with a clunking sound coming from the engine. the car has been taken to 3 separate mazda dealers where I was told by one of them "just wait until it breaks down" sound advice eh! from whats supposed to be a trained mechanic. Another of the dealers changed the spark plugs and then charged me £210 without even knowing or checking that this was the fault, the car now sits outside my house as a reminder that I have wasted just under £30,000 on a pile of junk that the manufacturers can't even fix.
For the person that commented that his Mazda "shutters and clanks" my wife and I (each) own Millennia's (identical year color, in fact can't tell them apart). They are 1999's with the Miller Cycle engines. They each have a miss generated by a defective coil. They both start missing when condensation is present in the coil. This is usually during warm up. Her's knocks so bad that you think that the supercharger is going to self-destruct. Being in electronics, and after finding that Mazda Canada wants $600 CDN for each coil I decided to take a chance at repairing it myself. First buy some "no arc" a high voltage liquid dielectric used in T.V. repair shops to stop arcing in or around the flyback transformer. Next remove the defective coil (use a code checker to determine which coil). 1,3,5, are across the back of the engine from passenger to driver side. 2,4,6, is across the front side (towards radiator). Pray that it is the front side you need... they take 1/5 the time to get at. Sand the coil and metal parts so the "no arc" will attach when coating. Bake the coil in a small counter top oven at 175 F for 1.5 hours with the door left open 1/4 inch. This will allow trapped moisture to escape. Coat with "no arc" and bake again (same time) let dry additional 24 hours... reinstall. Good Luck...
I must express my deepest disappointment with what is happening constantly to my MAZDA XEDOS 9 MILLER CYCLE ENGINE. Now at 134,000km it has happened that my transmission box broke. I bought a Mazda believing in Japanese quality, and wishing never to see car service any more. However, to my deepest disappointment, the opposite has happened and I am constantly in for service and I have spent huge amounts of money repairing things that normally do not require service. I was told I had to pay 2,200.00 Euro for transmission box repairs. As soon as it is repaired I am going to sell it immediately.
I do not have any further comment.
I have a xedos 9 with miller cycle engine, 250,000km engine and gearbox working normally.
I have a mazda xedos 9 2.3i with the miller cycle engine which I bought a week ago for £2000 and when I got home the next morning I started it and the smoke that came out was incredible!! Took it to my local garage in Leeds and they said they could temporarily fix the smoking problem. When I went back to collect it they told me it was OK and on starting the smoking had gotten worse, I mean it was like a factory!! its only done 61000 miles. It seems to drive OK, but it was just the smoking on starting up. What could be the problem? ben
I to have experienced this smoking from start up, took it to local garage, who have worked on miller cycle engines, they told me that there was a gap which had opened under the ashtray, thus letting cigarette ash drop inside the exhaust, this buildup was causing the excessive smoke:)
The mechanic said at first they where puzzled, as non smoking cars never had the problem, it was then they realized whatever was causing the problem had to be near or in the ashtray.
One way to make sure it never happens again is to either lock the ashtray or stop anybody smoking in the vehicle.:)
I am afraid, heavy smoking means a new supercharger is needed
and the price of a new supercharger amounts to thousands.
That's what happens when you buy a lemon.
Its quite common for the millers to smoke on start up or if left unused for awhile, if the supercharger is gone, the smoke
will be black and constant, and my experience as a Mazda mechanic, its very rare for a supercharger to go, and if they do, cheap to buy used.
Overall a magnificent machine, and wards reliability reports,
places the mazda xedos very high.
Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I have a 1998 Xedos 9 2.3 Miller (Millenia S for US readers) on 83k miles. There are some problems with the car, but the main one is that when accelerating at speed or when the engine is under load, the acceleration is very jerky. It is most noticeable when travelling on a motorway (highway) from a flat onto a gentle incline. So far the only solution I have is to use the hold button to downshift to get up the hill. I have had the throttle body out twice and cleaned up but no joy from that. Any clues/advice? Thanks.
One of the above postings relates to using a code checker to determine which coil is faulty, could anyone please enlighten me as to what this is. My Xedos 9 is shuddering like a tractor. I bought it last year it had only done 21k miles and I had it serviced at a non Mazda garage in October. They changed the plugs (apparently a no no until 50k miles), but it's shuddered since. I took it back, they switched the plugs around and said it was OK, but if I had any more probs to return it and they'd get a new coil. It happens when stationary and after driving somewhere parking for a short time then restarting. Thanks!
