1990 Nissan Axxess from North America - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Timing chain was repaired one year by the previous owner who is my brother in law at a cost of approximately $1000, the next year the timing chain went again and cost us $1000.

This vehicle "ticks", but according to the mechanic this is normal??

The next week the starter went and the cost was another $1000 as they appariently have to lift the motor to get at it.

The only door that works is the driver's side door, the others will not unlock. If you carry passengers, they have to climb over the stick shift, or sit in the back as if they are riding in a cab. This vehicle also loves gas!

I understand that it is a older van and that repairs are sometimes necessary, but this seems to be a very common problem. I would not ever buy an Axxess ever again.

General comments?

It finally died of a horriable death on the highway - :)

I love this van. I also had a bad starter, and I replaced it myself for 60.00. Oh, I did not have to remove the engine. I bought it brand new in 1990, and the starter was the only problem I ever had, other than buying new tires from time to time. This is the best dual sliding door minivan in the 90's.

Yeah I have two Axxess and one of them only the driver door would unlock, except for one time it decided it wasn't going to unlock either and I had to climb through the window. And mine 'ticks' too.

My mom has a 90 or 91 axxes and when the odometer got to 100000 k the timing chain snapped and all the valves got flattend and the head being aluminum warped so it was a $1300. touch to get new valves and springs, and shaved 30 thou. off the head deck.. but when that was all done holy crap the little axxes had lots of get up and go, step on the gas and light up the tires without hesatation.

I have a 1991 Axxess and it won't start. I put a new battery in it thinking that was the cause, it is not. I noticed that sometimes the starter will go from what I have been reading. I was also wandering it it might be the ignition switch. Also some people on this sight say that the engine has to be pulled to change the starter is this true? My vehicle has over 200,000kms on it, am I on borrowed time for the timing chain?

I have a 1990. 140,000 miles. Regarding the "clicking" sound in your engine: when the timing chain goes, there is always damage done to the rocker arms. You need to replace the rocker arms. The clicking will go away. This is not something your mechanic would have known. It is a unique characteristic of the engine in this car.

I bought this car because it was unique. It was the first "mini-van" to have shoulder restraints and headrests in the backseat. Recall that a popular consumer magazine gave it a bad write-up. They classified it as a passenger car because of its wheelbase measurement. For that reason, the Plymouth Voyager received top marks in the Mini-van class instead -- but it did not have backseat shoulder restraints, headrests or two sliding doors.

One pet peeve is the fact that the passenger side auto door lock does not release the lock on the passenger-side sliding door -- thus: no "axxess" without opening a door and reaching in to manually unlock the sliding door.

I have had trouble with the front axle boots. They tend to break. At 140,000 the power steering is leaking also. I have owned this car for 16 years. It needs another timing chain now. I should sell it, but I will not. It has been a great car.
